Why do I prefer machining my blades from bar stock instead of waterjet-cut blanks? Two main reasons: flexibility and edge quality. By starting with strips of steel, I can machine five different knife models from the same bar, allowing me to adjust production based on demand without committing to specific profiles ahead of time. The second reason is edge quality. Waterjet cutting often leaves a rough, tapered edge that requires additional machining or hand grinding to clean up. Since I’d have to machine those edges anyway, I prefer to skip that extra step and machine the blades directly from bar stock. It’s not necessarily the best approach for everyone, but it’s what works best for my manufacturing process!
