Conservative Jeremy Hunt criticises Labour for having a million NEETs, even though 872,000 of them were already NEETs under a Conservative government. He then argues against EU freedom of movement because Europeans will come to Britain and take jobs, conveniently ignoring that some of those NEETs could go to other European countries to find employment themselves. Freedom of movement works both ways. The Conservatives spent 14 years failing to provide sufficient opportunities for young people, then stripped them of the automatic right to live and work across 27 EU countries. Now Hunt complains about youth unemployment while opposing something that could expand their employment opportunities. His argument also relies on the economically illiterate assumption that there is a fixed number of jobs and that every European worker employed in Britain means one fewer job for a British worker. Workers contribute to economic growth, create demand, pay taxes and help businesses expand. Hunt was Chancellor. He understand this. Instead, he's recycling the same tired anti-immigration arguments that helped deliver Brexit, while refusing to acknowledge the economic and social damage caused by his own party. You cannot spend 14 years failing Britain's young people, restrict their opportunities across Europe, and then pretend the resulting crisis is entirely somebody else's responsibility.
