A church in Giza was set on fire, and it could have been much worse. On October 22, a man got past the gate of the Church of the Virgin Mary in Birk El-Khiyam, Kerdasa, without being stopped. Bishop Theodosius of Central Giza reviewed the security footage himself and confirmed that, thank God, no one was hurt. Now people are asking how someone carrying a fuel bottle walked straight into a church. Coptic Solidarity stands for equal citizenship and real protection for Copts in Egypt. A Coptic researcher is serving five years with hard labor just for talking about his faith online. Dr. Augustinos Samaan, a comparative religion scholar, ran a YouTube channel with over 100,000 subscribers where he posted academic videos answering questions about Christianity and responding to anti-Christian rhetoric. On October 1, 2025, masked security officers arrested him. First accused of terrorism, he was charged with “contempt of religion” under Egypt’s blasphemy law. On January 3, 2026, he was sentenced in a secret trial. His family and lawyers were never notified. The appeals court upheld the sentence. His cassation challenge is set for November 15.
