Really glad cattle producers could do their part and take a 10-15% drop in prices to make this happen! 🥳🤦🏻♂️
@SecRollins how much will it take to get the next 2% drop in beef prices… 🙄
Beef prices just saw their BIGGEST monthly drop since 2024! 🥩🇺🇸
That marks THREE consecutive months of declining beef prices — welcome progress for American families at the grocery store.
Under @POTUS, we’re fighting to lower grocery costs, rebuild America’s cattle herd, strengthen domestic beef production, and put American ranchers FIRST.
More work ahead, but we’re moving in the right direction!

We have to pay more for food if we want local food with local employees. It’s an uphill battle. Everyone thinks getting USDA inspection is the problem. Making it work economically is the problem.
Ken is spot on here
You can argue cattle/beef market cycles are as old as time but it didn’t have to be this severe - major packers chose to not expand when they regained (record) profitability and in return killed their golden goose of excess cattle supply

Super small kill relative to expectations. Packers may just be serious this time around.
#cattle 97K inspected vs. 103K last week, and 119.3K last year, Sat 17K vs. 24K last week, and 6.5K last year. Week 526K vs. 542K last week, and 493.8K last year. YTD -7.5%
Or are we just going to put it back in place to make everyone feel good and spend a bunch of time/money to have the WTO rule against it again?
Is this Trump’s tariffs all over again? (2/2)
All of this talk about mandatory country of origin labeling (MCOOL) and NO ONE bringing up that it was ruled against by the WTO
Where are the international trade experts here? How do you put it in place and abide by WTO rules? (1/2)

I spoke with Joel Salatin today (Polyface Farm).
He has the exact same assessment.
Trump isn't deregulating meat processing at all.
Buy the rumor, sell the news. The belief that Trump would deregulate meat processing and give farmers direct retail access was overblown.

How did this admin go from the most friendly to U.S. cattle ranchers to one of the worst!?
Seriously, who is pushing this crap

"Just 3% of supply" is an ignorant statement in the commodity world. A marginal 1-2% shortage or excess sets the price on 100% of the supply. ie. MEX Border = +$50/cwt. live despite being few % points of total supply.
If Tyson can put one plant up for sale then why not all of them? 🤔

I always find it interesting how this industry looks at all fundamentals as percentages (Placements, Marketings, COF) but refuses to look at markets, returns and margins that way - always dollars per head and never % margin per head

One other thing to consider about the market right now is the Beef Packers appear to be willing to carry meat over the weekend if they can’t at least hold the market. That tells me they’re not planning to ramp up production at all.
This is definitely something I’ve taken for granted that cattle producers would have realized
Replying to @660ag
Nope. USDA grading can only be performed at the time of slaughter in a USDA inspected plant by a USDA grader. No other place or option.
Even with a lower beef cutout and continued negative margins I keep hearing of packers wanting to keep steady/higher kills to “get rid of” high priced fat cattle inventory - does that mean they just expect cutout to continue lower?

In my experience it’s never about the specific fundamentals but about when market psychology switches from being a supply based market (because of short supply) to a demand based market (because of short demand)
In the future any cattleman that tells me closing packing plants doesn’t matter will get sent a 2026 calendar as a reminder 📉
The shocking thing this week wasn’t that Cargill didn’t put out a cash bid or the regionals were nonexistent…but where was JBS in the north!? 🦗🦗🦗
Someone is going to have to do an op-ed on how Cargill went from being the biggest fat cattle cash proponent to now caring less about price discovery than anyone 🤔
