Countercurrents Reaches 3 Million Monthly Readers
We are grateful to share that Countercurrents has reached 3 million monthly unique visitors. This milestone belongs not to us alone, but to the thousands of writers, readers, translators, activists, scholars, artists, and supporters who have sustained this independent, reader-funded platform over the years.
At a time when independent media face enormous challenges, this growth reaffirms the continuing need for spaces committed to peace, justice, democracy, human rights, ecological sustainability, and critical inquiry.
We thank all our readers and supporters for their trust and solidarity. We remain committed to providing a platform for voices and movements that are often marginalized by corporate media.
Countercurrents.org is ranked 8th among the world's top 10 left-wing alternative news websites, according to ChatGPT.
Dear Friend,
Countercurrents completes 24 years today. It was on March 27, 2002, that CC published its first article. In those turbulent years, CC has published thousands of articles on wars in different parts of the world; genocidal attacks on Gaza; torture in Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo Bay; the plight of political prisoners in India; riots; communal harmony; attacks on Dalits; the ecological collapse of our world; pleas for peace; alternative solutions to the polycrisis we collectively face; as well as art, literature, history, and profiles of both well-known and lesser-known individuals. We have also documented the growing income inequality and spirited resistance to imperialism.
This has been made possible by thousands of writers, activists, academics, journalists, students, and ordinary people from around the world. CC now has an impressive archive of about 90,000 articles, which a friend recently described as “a living archive of resistance.”
I would also like to take this moment to remember those who were part of our journey but are no longer with us: K. P. Sasi, Admiral L. Ramdas and T. Vijayendra (Viju) from India; John Scales Avery from Denmark; Emily Spence from the USA; and George Venturini and Vacy Vlazna from Australia.
I would like to thank you all for your continuous support over the years. This would not have been possible without your wholehearted support.
March on!
In solidarity,
Binu Mathew

K.P Sasi Memorial Webinar: "15th August: The Hindu Rashtra is here. What comes next?"
Background:
As India marks another Independence Day, the fourth in the series of webinars organised by Countercurrents.org in memory of the late K.P. Sasi will confront an uncomfortable truth: the secular, pluralistic republic envisioned by the Constitution has been systematically replaced by an exclusionary Hindu Rashtra. This webinar will examine the dangerous trajectory of extremist ideology in power and its devastating implications for India's democracy, economy, and social fabric. More crucially, it will explore pathways to reclaim the Indian Republic and restore its founding principles.
Concept:
The transformation is complete. What was once a democratic republic has morphed into a Hindu Rashtra where power is concentrated in upper-caste hands, minorities face systematic persecution, and corporate cronies plunder national resources with state protection. The extremist ideology that once operated from the margins now controls state power, implementing cultural homogenization that serves only the privileged few.
This represents a fundamental restructuring of the Indian state. Democratic institutions have been compromised, civil society space has shrunk, and dissent is branded "anti-national." The economic cost is staggering: the richest 1% now own over 40% of national wealth while 230 million live below the poverty line. During the pandemic, billionaires' wealth grew by 90% while 130 million were pushed into poverty. This is class warfare disguised as development, enabled by weaponizing religious divisions.
The Way Forward: Sub-themes for Discussion:
1. The Architecture of Authoritarianism: How Democratic Institutions Were Captured
2. Economic Apartheid: Crony Capitalism Under the Hindu Rashtra
3. The Resistance Rises: Regional Movements and Democratic Alternatives
4. Reclaiming the Republic: Pathways to Democratic Renewal
