Maybe it was Bruce Lee. Maybe it was Jackie Chan or Tony Jaa. Everyone has that one fighter who unlocked an entire genre for them. That genre used to be difficult to share, but not anymore.
Here are the 51 Greatest Fight Scenes...According To One Guy: bit.ly/51-Greatest-Fight-Sce…
Still so early that you have to let all numbers, even the ones that tell you things might be better than it looks, even out with time. But very broadly speaking we can say Miami's defense at least has better fundamentals than it appears for the No. 25 DefRating.
Miami's Shot Quality (Expected eFG) through three games is 53.78, Rank 20.
Their opponents in those three games...
Minnesota: 50.43
Detroit: 51.27
Charlotte: 50.36
Meaning Heat have allowed the lowest Shot Quality in the league at 50.7. Defense hasn't been as bad as it looks.
Replying to @CoupNBA @MiamiHEAT
Great write up as always, Coup. It all flows downstream of defense and rebounding. It starts with stops.
Do you have any insight on Miamis shot quality vs opponent in any/each of the first 3 games?
The bad news is the result, Miami now 0-3 after their comeback fell short in Charlotte.
Good news was the longest stretch of elite defense this team has shown, if not a proof of concept at least evidence that they can be what they need to be.

Heat Defensive Reb %
1st Half: 53.8
2nd Half: 84.6
Much closer to what was expected out of this group. Threes flipped, but those threes mattered because they gained control in the margins.
It's allowed a couple layups, but Heat have been pressuring up way beyond the arc all quarter and it has the Hornets on their heels a bit.
Helps to get some threes to fall on the other end to take advantage, of course.
Some bad shooting luck for Miami's defense tonight, but the controllable is the glass and they're running a 53.8 DReb%. Part of why they've allowed an unusual 18 rim FGA.
Not going to fix everything on a weird B2B, but eventually the 3's will turn.
Heat on pace for 56 free-throws, Hornets on pace for 20 turnovers. Still tied after one quarter, little hit or miss on either side of the court but cleaner overall.
Last night was weird with foul trouble, but Bam goes through an adjustment period every time there are major changes to roster, role, system. That’s the pattern. Every change means a different balance between playmaking and shot creation. This team needs both at different times.
They didn't lose to Detroit like they lost to Minnesota, with plenty of gains on the margins, but the result was the same.
The Heat look like a team trying to find themselves, and in the meantime any good they do has been undone by shooting.

Bench lineup with no Bam or Giannis had a heavy lift in that half, and they did their job. Bobby and Pelle both +6.
On the brighter side from last night, thought there was a handful of nice offensive interplay between Bam and Giannis. Far from perfect, of course, but that's what you want to see, them working off one another, getting each other quality looks.
Heat weren't great in their coverages last night, in part because Edwards did well playing off re-screens that caught the on-ball defender. Some up-to-touch stuff didn't include contests.
But Wolves also only had 6 rim makes, one off their low for the past four seasons.
The vibes were high, until they weren't.
You aren't going to win many games getting beat at the arc like Miami did as Ant spoiled Giannis' debut. The question now is how much of tonight is or isn't worth real concern.
For one game? Not much.

Spo staggering Bam and Giannis with the same sub pattern he used last preseason game they appeared in together.
First six minutes of Heat-Wolves has this game on pace for about 120 possessions. Warp speed.
Wolves hitting jumpers in all zones, but zero attempts at the rim so far. Heat 1-of-6 in the paint with one rim attempt.
Still Nolan’s best movie.
