This is how smart people think about analytics
Kyle Shanahan says a 51% analytics recommendation won’t convince him to go for it because he gets one shot, not an hour at a blackjack table
“I don’t want to hear about it if it’s 51% of the time we should go for it.”
“As I always say, I’m not sitting here playing Blackjack for an hour with no one else at the table, and eventually I’ll get 51% of it. Like, I have this one try, and I have a feel for it. I’ve been doing it too long.”
“But what I want to know from him, when it’s not a feel, when it, no, this is 98%. We don’t even need to talk about it. So we don’t need to talk about it. Tell me when it’s that, and I’ll just do it.”

We’re off the turf at the Meadowlands-which means racing has been CANCELED for closing night.
That does it for live thoroughbred flat racing in New Jersey until May 2027. Far Hill is still scheduled to run their jumps race card tomorrow. @larrycollmus will be on the call.

🧵 1. Concerning but hardly surprising numbers released by the @jockeyclub this morning. The 2026 foal crop drops to 16,500 and the report of mares bred is under 24,000. Also, only 670 stallions were in service nationally, further shrinking the breeding-genetics pool.

The Downside of Downsizing
I know that we are supposed to be celebrating the grand opening of the new Belmont Park, and I genuinely hope that there is a lot to be excited and happy about. But I happened to stumble across a post on reddit (see attached image), and went to the NYRA website to confirm. After a few frustrating minutes, I arrived at the conclusion that they apparently don't want to advertise the cost of reserved seating for the 2027 Belmont Stakes (which officially go on sale tomorrow).
And it's easy to understand why.
That the seats will presumably sell out is beside the point.

PSA: when you “win” an auction, you just paid more for something than anyone else was willing to pay for it. That means that it is very likely a negative EV investment unless you had uncovered valuable information that was available to nobody else.

Dwight Gooden’s radar gun said 95 MPH.
Mason Miller’s says 103 MPH.
I synced both clips to release and again when the ball hits the catcher’s glove.
It’s going to be hard to convince me that Doc Gooden was only throwing 95 here.
Different era. Different radar technology. But visually? That baseball is getting there in a hurry.
95 vs. 103… you tell me. 👀🔥
