for a while now i think younger fic writers have seen fanfic as a 1:1 exhange between a provider and a consumer and not community sharing. a lot of problems branch off that but that's the core mindset that is killing good fic/fandom

Pre-smartphone, it was standard practice to download fics to read them offline. I had multiple apps to download and convert fics so I could read them on a PDA. I know people that would print out fics into whole binder archives of their favorites
