Sadly, no signs of expat tax relief in the House bill after 2 days… There are no reports that it’s even being discussed. It's clear nobody in DC cares about the challenges Americans abroad face. It doesn’t matter what campaign promises were made. The vast majority of Americans, and seemingly congressman, simply cannot understand the level of pain this causes for so many. Even those who are planning to relocate abroad or start companies abroad and have done research are shocked by what is required. It seems US expats will continue to enjoy the perks of US tax compliance: • Can't open basic bank accounts • Denied mortgages, loans, investment accounts by foreign banks • Pay thousands for complex tax compliance • If you make a mistake face 5-6 figure penalties It seems that US expats are back to the same 2 options: 1 - Keep complying — ie. Keep paying, stressing, and making sure you are up to date with any rule changes. 2 - Renounce your US citizenship and thereby give up all privileges associated with it. 9+ million Americans forgotten again… #ExpatTax #TaxTwitter
