I’m Jay, 42, a South African programmer living in Tokyo 👋
I started coding at six and sold an adventure game engine to a Japanese company at sixteen. Since then I’ve lived in England and Sweden, run a software company, and taught kids to code.
These days I make apps, games, developer tools and occasionally electronics. A lot of my projects start with wanting something for myself and getting carried away building it.
Outside of that, I’m learning Japanese and enjoy crane games. I give most of the prizes to friends. I mostly enjoy the challenge more than the prize.
I share what I’m building, opinions about software, and bits of life in Japan. Occasionally a broken keyboard 😅
Went into the office, collected my new health card and colleague said “why are you in the office today? You should WFH, no meetings today and you need rest”.
So I’m going to work remotely the rest of today 😄
Oh Tokyo, I missed you. Straight to bed once the taxi gets me home but then I’m having good coffee again!
Cloudflare has confirmed they’ll refund my D1 charges, and their engineers are helping investigate the write volume.
I appreciate everyone who stepped in. I’ll share the useful findings once we’ve checked them.
Quick update on the D1 bill: Cloudflare engineers have offered to help, and I have a support ticket open. Thanks to everyone sharing useful suggestions.
I’ve also confirmed the budget alert arrived.
Most of the D1 cost was writes. I still don’t have a confirmed explanation for that volume, so I’ll share more once I do.
My criticism was of D1’s billing for my personal apps. I’ve also said I value R2 and other Cloudflare services. The invoice breakdown is in the thread. I’m asking for help with the bill and spending controls. I’m leaving the personal exchange here.

Anybody that is considering using @Cloudflare D1 for simple database, don’t. It’s a total scam. I had 2x small databases on there for two little apps of mine, that only I use, so nothing public or heavily used. They sent me a bill for over $500 USD for reads and writes!!
@dok2001 @eastdakota Luna (@ImLunaHey) suggested I tag you here. Would appreciate help reviewing this D1 bill and feedback on a user-set spending cutoff for personal apps. I’ve added the invoice breakdown here: teapawt.net/Cyberlane/status/21117…
Replying to @Cyberlane @Cloudflare
Checked the invoice now: 452,256,462 rows written ($453) and 60,197,421,138 rows read ($60.20) for Sep 17–Oct 16. D1 total: $513.20 before tax, mostly writes. Those are the invoice quantities. They confirm the bill, not the cause of the usage.

I just had my very first experience with a cult trying to make me go to their church… never had that happen before!
Usually elderly people come to talk to me, sometimes give me little gifts or candy, but never asked me to go to their “church” before 😳
Don’t get me wrong, the R2 storage on @Cloudflare is amazing, as are many of their other services, but their D1 database is an absolute and total scam!! I could rent a heavy-duty PostgreSQL database for less than they charged me for this!!
@Cloudflare if you want to make this right, my inbox is open and I’m happy to discuss the details.
Next week I’m going to the Philippines for less than 24 hours and then flying back home to Japan…
Paying a small fortune in airline fees, simply to sit a simple test 😅
I do not want to see another PowerPoint. This company has their HR documents in PowerPoint files. wtf
