ALT BIG HEART (a poem I wrote in 2017) Australia cannot be summed up in an anthem or wrapped in a flag her heart is too ancient and too large This land brittle fragile fierce is my country and more than a continental island with a colonial past She does not care for the colour of your skin thickness matters more than the quantity of melanin With a powerful sun shining above it is difficult sometimes to believe it is the same golden star that lights and warms the rest of the planet If you broadly state Australia is: THIS – THAT – THE OTHER you will be wrong I will not be offended but I will be protective for she is my mother she is home The people of this land can’t be painted with the same tar they are so many things they are a mixed up mob they are still in a state of figuring they are arguing at angles they are working it out and only the mistaken are certain
