🧪 Capsule Sponge Triage in Reflux — Can We Reduce Unnecessary Endoscopy?
4-year prospective cohort, 871 patients.
Key findings:
• 88% adequate samples
• 62% avoided endoscopy
• Abnormal CS (~10%) strongly predicted significant pathology
• PPV for Barrett’s: 43.5%
• NPV: 98.2%
• >97% patient acceptability
Detected: 1 cancer, 2 dysplasia, 34 Barrett’s cases.
Long-term follow-up confirmed safety.
Takeaway: Capsule sponge safely stratifies reflux patients, increases diagnostic yield, and optimizes endoscopy resources.
