Do you know how many times schools blame students and parents when a child doesn't learn vs how many times it looks at its own shortcomings? There is a study by Dr. Galen Alessi from Western MI Univ. Fifty school psychologists were asked what factors were responsible for a child's learning difficulties, looking at over 5000 cases. Guess how many times they responded it was due to curriculum, inappropriate teaching practices, or school admin factors? The answer: ZERO. That's right. NONE. It was the never the school's fault, it was the student's or the parent's fault. And don't get me started on this supposed school employee referring to a student as an idiot. Seriously? Grow up. Link to article is in comments.
Can't decode ccvc words its because their an idiot, not paying attention or need sped or maybe bec the parents spend more time b*tching abt things they dont understand than reviewing with and reading to their child

Excellent, accurate article. Well worth a read. "Only after we have wasted years of the students’ schooling do they finally gain access to small-step, direct teaching—the way it should have been taught all along. This is no way to run an education system. We must stop using explicit instruction as a remedy when it should be standard operating procedure."

Ohio Gov DeWine. Great leadership on education. "Kareem, I'm retiring soon. I've got grandkids, and I want them to learn to read. Just that simple." That's not politics, it's leadership. Ohio audited Higher Ed on compliance with the law. Just released. ohiochannel.org/video/govern…

If a child starts behind in reading, the odds of catching up fall fast: • 49% in kindergarten • 29% in first grade • 18% in second • 5% in third We don’t have a third-grade reading crisis. We have an early learning problem. Great take, @ChadAldeman. chadaldeman.com/p/do-not-wai…

79% of parents say their kids get all B’s and above—and assume grade-level mastery. Reality: report cards often give a false sense of security about learning.

Deeply puzzled on why schools didn’t adopt the science of reading, like a half century ago.
Mississippi has leapfrogged nearly 40 states in 4th grade reading.

This is why schools that don’t invest heavily in making sure their children are reading at grade level expectations by the time they exit 1st grade and instead pour their resources in later grades in an attempt to catch them up are not wisely investing their time, money or personnel and worst they are in fact hurting kids. It is true that when it comes to reading support it is better late than never, but when it comes to reading, we need to stop putting all our focus on remediation and actively engage in prevention.

Every article, study, interview shows the 1st step to improve reading results for kids: adults have to be tired of failure enough to reflect and make tough changes. But many refuse to slaughter their sacred cows. "We just have to keep doing this/that." Then you get what you get.
