One of the games released for the Mega Drive was Virtua Racing, which used a dedicated 3D chip built directly into the cartridge to achieve 3D graphics. Sega probably should have stopped there, but instead came up with another idea: since adding a 3D chip to every individual game would be expensive and inefficient, why not create a dockable 3D expansion unit? That idea eventually became the Super 32X. Personally, I thought it was a pretty good concept. The problem, however, was that it was released even later than the Sega Saturn. If it had come out just one year earlier, it might have done quite well thanks to the popularity of Virtua Fighter. It's a real shame. Looking back, wouldn't it have made more sense to simply release games on dedicated 3D-enhanced cartridges, just like Virtua Racing?
