Tomorrow night! I can’t wait to regale you with Dan Howley stories. In the 1920s, baseball was THE game in Toronto, and there was no bigger sporting personality in the city than Howling Dan.
There's still time to sign up for this Wednesday night's SABR Hanlan's Point Chapter autumn meeting on Zoom. At 730pm October 21st, we welcome @DMFox705 to talk about his book "The Howleyites". All baseball fans welcome! Message us for details.

A hyrdro outage kept me from posting this yesterday, but here is my Indiana Jones-like quest to identify these players from the Opening Day photo of the Toronto Maple Leafs in their brand new ballpark. /1

For the past several weeks, I've been researching this photo of the 1926 Toronto Maple Leafs.I've been able to track down the identities of every player in the photo. On the 100th anniversary of the Leafs' Little World Series win on Sunday , I'll release it.

So, the Jays aren’t going to the postseason. 100 years ago, the baseball Leafs were on their way to the MiLB championship against Louisville. Read all about that season - and new ballpark - in my latest book. Available at Indigo, Amazon, and most digital platforms.

The context all of this should be viewed in is that Sanchez was 18 this season. There is still considerable room for physical and baseball maturity.
Some thoughts on Juan Sanchez...... On the surface, his numbers (.638 OPS, and 7 HR - 1 less than he hit in 38 fewer games in the DSL) are disappointing. But this was an aggressive assignment, but Jays felt we was ready for it. His season was a pair of peaks and valleys. /1

86 years ago, Phil “Babe” Marchildon of tiny (pop: 3K) Penetanguishene, ON, made his big league debut. A half dozen years earlier, Phil was a central character in the integration of Ontario baseball, which I detailed in my first book. indigo.ca/products/on-accoun…

I’ve been working on identifying the players in this Opening Day photo of the 1926 Toronto Maple Leafs, taken at their brand new waterfront stadium of the same name. It’s taken some detective work, but I’ve positively ID’d almost all of them.

Growing up in Midland, ON, I was always curious about the big black and white photo that hung in the lobby of the Penetanguishene arena. Phil was the first Canadian born-and-raised MLB star of the modern era.
#OTD 86 years ago, Phil Marchildon (Penetanguishene, Ont.) made his MLB debut with the Philadelphia A's. He started and allowed five runs in three innings in a 5-2 A's loss to the Washington Senators at Shibe Park. P.S. Things got better for Marchildon.

A century ago, baseball was THE game in Toronto, and the Leafs were the headliners for much of the year. Hockey and rugby football were still seasonal sports, and basketball was in its infancy. I had a great time talking about the ‘26 Leafs. go.bsky.app/redirect?u=https…

A century ago, a Toronto team booked their ticket to the postseason. The 1926 Leafs likely could have given a few MLB teams a run for their money.
100 years ago today, there was joy not just in Toronto over the Leafs clinching the International League pennant, but around the league itself because Toronto had ended Baltimore’s seven-year reign. The Leafs were headed to the Little World Series.

100 yrs ago today, the Toronto Maple Leafs swept a doubleheader from Buffalo, all but clinching the International League pennant, ending the Baltimore Orioles seven-year reign. Clarence Fisher, waived by Buffalo in July, won the nightcap.
Long before it became the centre of the hockey universe, Toronto was a baseball town. Learn about a championship team of 100 years ago and a new stadium in my latest book from August Publishing.

Even though he’s been moved to the bullpen since early August, Jays still view him as a starter. BA loves the stuff.

I’ve been high on Daniel Guerra since the first time I saw him in 2024. The FB is legit, Jays have done a remarkable job helping him to smooth and repeat his mechanics. BA calls him a sleeper for 2027. 1/2 baseballamerica.com/stories/…

With the second-smallest bonus pool, the Blue Jays had to be creative as well as lucky to land the player they wanted, Tennessee HS C Will Brick. My latest for @TorontoStar: thestar.com/sports/blue-jays…
