After Park Place Dealerships founder Ken Schnitzer sold off eight dealerships to Asbury Automotive Group in 2020 to the tune of $685 million, he pivoted to form a new business alongside Neil Grossman: Avondale Dealerships. When identifying prospective leaders for the business, Hesham Elgaghil came to mind. The 48-year-old had been a long-time Park Place team member, diving in headfirst into the used car sale business at 22 and quickly working his way up the ranks, gaining a strong foothold in Dallas luxury auto sales. “Whether he is facing an opportunity or a problem, Hesham considers the people involved as well as the business outcome,” Schnitzer says. “That balance of strategy, communication, and a people-first mindset gave me confidence in his potential to lead, build trust, bring people together, and move the organization forward.” dmagazine.com/publications/d…

Dallas entrepreneur Ben Lamm is bringing another company out of stealth mode. This time, he’s teamed up with Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey to establish Warhound, a new defense tech startup focused on genetically enhancing dogs for the United States military. Investors have already put $200 million behind the venture. Based in Dallas, the startup is combining Colossal’s genetics, cloning, and animal biology capabilities with Anduril‘s defense technology—like advanced cybernetic augments—to change how dogs are bred, trained, and prepared for missions on the battlefield. In other words, Colossal will help birth healthier puppies, and Anduril will engineer enhanced senses in them. dmagazine.com/business-econo…

Jake Oettinger has been the NHL's best goalie in October. But we've written that sentence before. What @seanshapiro wants to know is what's stopping Oettinger from replicating this form over the rest of the season. If he can, he's winning the Vezina: dmagazine.com/sports/2026/10…

A year ago, El Califa de León brought its tacos to Dallas, creating a storm of influencer hype, five-hour-long lines, and crushing disappointment. The pop-up was a disaster, leaving guests feeling scammed after they were served basic tacos and Costco packaged desserts at sky-high prices. The Mexico City-based taquería blamed a local partner for being unable to meet their standards. Well, now El Califa de León has taken its traveling show to Manhattan, where New York City diners can now pay $19 per taco. So far, New York isn't thrilled with the value on offer. After the Big Apple has exported so many disappointing chain restaurants southward, it’s nice to finally turn the tables. We remember all the gory details from last year's Dallas pop-up, and quote a variety of New York food writers and reviewers. dmagazine.com/micropost/cali…
