🇺🇸 Trump’s defeat is cause for relief but not complacency.
The loss of a bad America does not guarantee the return of the old one.
“America First”, hostility to multilateralism and reluctance to underwrite European security will outlast Trump. Starlink has already demonstrated how privately controlled infrastructure can become a geopolitical weapon. Britain is embedding the same dependency through Palantir and other proprietary American systems.
Outside the EU, Britain is uniquely exposed: too small to stand alone, yet increasingly dependent upon a superpower whose politics can reverse every four years.
@andyburnham must not treat Trump’s weakening as permission to slow European reintegration. In fact it is the reason to accelerate it.
Britain needs to return to the Single Market and customs union, strengthen European defence and rebuild control over its energy, technology, food and critical infrastructure.
The Atlantic alliance matters but Britain will be a stronger American ally from inside a powerful Europe, not stranded between competing empires.
As Mark Carney warned, the choice for middle powers is increasingly stark: strategic autonomy or subordination.
We have been warned enough.

To everyone who says Russia is winning:
Moscow says it shot down 709 Ukrainian drones in one night, over 14 regions and Crimea.
Countries that are winning don't spend their nights defending their own refineries and warehouses.

🇺🇸🇺🇦 The US is planning to ask NATO allies to contribute more money to the NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, or PURL, a key weapons-delivery program for Ukraine, - Bloomberg
The US has already signaled to some allies that it will ask for the money, with a funding gap of about $2 billion for weapons packages that have already been approved.
Let’s be clear here, the USA is SELLING weapons and profiting through the PURL program

"Peacekeepers." Moscow's word for its troops in its neighbours' land.
Transnistria: since 1992. Still there.
Georgia: "peacekeepers" in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. 2008: the tanks follow.
In Kremlin language, a peacekeeper is the first stage of an occupation.

On the one hand, American officials encourage Europeans to build up their own military forces; at the same time, they promote parties and leaders who oppose defense spending, favor Russia, or want to break European solidarity

This cartoon is from 1930s. The West was quietly watching as russia was killing Ukrainian people.
Back then, they argued:
"The Soviet Union is not the Russian Empire!"
"Tales of millions starving aren't real!"
"We shouldn't anger the bear!"
"It's the leadership! The people are not to blame!"
Now they argue similar nonsense:
"Russia is not the Soviet Union!"
"All that footage of murder and genocide isn't real!"
"We shouldn't anger the nuclear country!"
"It's just Putin's war! The people are not to blame!"
A hundred years has passed and nothing has changed.
History will judge us for making the same mistake again.

Ukrainian forces recently advanced northeast of Borova.
Other Key Takeaways ⬇️
- The Kremlin is refusing to compromise on its original maximalist demands from 2022 while continuing to ignore Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s offers of large-scale frontline ceasefires as Russia’s losses grow disproportionately to its territorial gains.
- The Kremlin is attempting to portray Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russia as the obstacle to peace talks – the latest Russian effort to falsely blame Ukraine for Russia’s refusal to meaningfully engage in negotiations.
- The Kremlin continues to try to push European leaders out of peace talks, despite Russian demands that a peace settlement restructure the European security architecture.
- The US Department of State approved the possible sale of 500 PAC-3 Patriot ballistic missile interceptors to Ukraine, but the delivery will reportedly not occur for several years.
- Russian forces launched 134 drones against Ukraine overnight on October 30 to 31 and 168 drones and loitering munitions during the day on October 31.

I'm British, and turned eighteen in 2005. I have NEVER had to wait more than a minute or two to cast my vote. CONCLUSION 🧵(1/2): Putin would have the world, and especially the United States, believe that he is somehow holding back from crushing Ukraine, but that he could do so at any moment of his choosing. The opposite is the case.
If Putin had had a way of ending the war quickly, he surely would have used it. The effort to field an army large enough to make virtually no gains is costing Putin a fortune, driving up inflation in Russia, and generating increasing social discontent. Fielding a larger army would cost more with no guarantee of materially changing the situation on the front. That is why Putin is holding back at least for now. ⬇️
Putin has likely recognized the folly of trying to drown Ukraine in Russian blood and has instead opted to try to hammer Ukraine into submission with a strategic bombing campaign. The Russians have secured a temporary advantage in the skies over Ukraine through their jet-powered drones and the shortage of Patriot missiles that can intercept their ballistic missiles. But Ukraine is fielding solutions to defend against the jet-powered drones, and it is hardening and decentralizing its infrastructure to survive the ballistic missile strikes (as well as developing its own ballistic missile interceptors, although that effort will take time).
The Russian strikes are currently devastating Ukrainian energy and other infrastructure and imposing a brutal cost on Ukrainian civilians—as Putin intends. But there is no reason to think that this strategic bombing campaign will be any more successful than every other strategic bombing campaign in history—all of which have failed to compel a country holding its own on the battlefield to surrender.
It is unclear whether Putin is lying about Russian gains or being lied to by his own military—or both. Russian military correspondents constantly complain of what they call “beautiful reports” that Russian military units send to higher headquarters, claiming gains they have not made. Ukrainian forces say that they have been able to use the Russian military’s own internal culture of lying to their advantage, luring Russian troops into traps because the Russians think that they are moving through territory they control. Leaked Russian military maps show phantom gains, often matching Putin’s claims. The pervasive lying within the Russian military is a problem for Russian soldiers, but likely an advantage for Putin, as it supports his own efforts to present Russian forces as advancing and winning when, in fact, they are doing neither.
