My first piece (as a freelancer) for the @nytimes: @billiejeanking, Mary Carillo, @ChrissieEvert and @PHShriver on a pivotal time in women's tennis: nyti.ms/2PbwLbJ
From military vets with PTSD to children struggling with anxiety or low self-esteem, horses really can change lives and provide a sense of direction in this increasingly mad world of ours. "What you give to a horse is what you receive in return" nytimes.com/athletic/7574195…
After winning the @RolexEquestrian Grand Prix in Brussels on a horse called Gangster, German world champ Richard Vogel took his new ride for a spin. Fun couple of days reporting on the Brussels Stephex Masters:
Been to many press rooms, but this is the first one with a view of horses and a dog having a snooze on the floor. In fact, dogs are also roaming the lavish VIP area freely. Horse people are a little different! Fun times at the Brussels Stephex Masters for @TheAthletic.
From Brigitte Bardot's shot donkey to Totilas, the world's most expensive dressage horse, no challenge is too big for Dr. Tom Mariën of @Equitom1. My story for @TheAthletic on Dr. Tom Mariën of @Equitom1, the Belgian vet revolutionizing equine medicine:

While many sports are just beginning to adapt to extreme heat, equestrian sports may offer a blueprint for others to follow. 🐴🌡️ My story: nytimes.com/athletic/7508180…
Yesterday's Substack story by @scambers73 on surging @usopen grounds passes seems to have really have hit a nerve with tennis fans the world over: over 1 mln views & cited in Daily Mail and other news outlets:

A grounds pass ticket for day 1 at the @usopen is currently $363. Some might call it market forces, but in simple terms, it's an outrage. New Substack here. Subscribe for free if you can.

The U.S. Open is owned by the USTA which is a non-profit. The idea that a day one ground pass is $363 is absurd. The USTA’s mission is to promote the sport of tennis. How is a $363 ground pass consistent with this mission?

The $363 Day 1 grounds pass price is from Ticketmaster's resale market; the USTA's official face value is $65. cbsnews.com/newyork/news/n… thebiglead.com/us-open-drawin…
Here is a very simple solution that will help all stakeholders in tennis: get rid of best-of-five!
It should not be possible that three matches can’t be completed in a day on Centre Court at @Wimbledon - It is time to start earlier
Just what does it cost to come a @Wimbledon member? Answer: the annual membership fee is the same as a meal for four at an average London restaurant. @scambers73 has the story:

Reaction to news that @serenawilliams is playing singles @wimbledon:
1. It’s very exciting.
2. She’s not ready. Two doubles matches is not enough, esp at 44.
3. She’s playing only this summer. If she planned to play longer, she’d have played more events. We shall see I guess!
Spoke to many athletes over the years, but never one via video call while riding a horse in the woods! German superstar show jumper Richard Vogel is a special one. My intvw with Richi for @TheAthletic as he is on the brink of show jumping greatness: nytimes.com/athletic/7341885…
Just imagine if, say, Bode Miller had made a winning comeback, got injured, had entered the Olympics and crashed. He would have been hailed a hero for trying. Funny how @LindseyVonn is criticised by some for daring to dream big. Utterly sexist (and sadly, so predictable)
So sad & shocked to hear of the death, at 46, of Mark Hodgkinson. I spent many slams in the same press room with him, and will never forget his warmth, his mischievous humor & his ability to never take himself, or tennis, too seriously. Wishing his family much strength.
Horrific, tragic news. Mark and I worked together on The Tennis Space and Fantasy Wimbledon and shared many laughs on the tennis circuit over the years. Such a nice guy, great fun. So, so sad. telegraph.co.uk/tennis/2026/…
Something positive coming out of the US for a change this month! Can't wait to see @lindseyvonn competing again
She's back! 🥇🇺🇸
After retiring in 2019, Olympic gold medalist @lindseyvonn is now returning to the slopes for training with the @usskiteam.

Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X theguardian.com/media/2024/n…
But the @WTA doesn't mind mind having the world's top female tennis players compete in Saudi Arabia of all places...This is a storm in a teacup and you know it. V disappointing.
Shocked and saddened by the horrible scenes of violence coming out of Amsterdam this morning. The tolerant Netherlands I grew up in sadly has ceased to exist.

In the coming days there's gonna be a lot of opining about what the Harris campaign did wrong, but this election was not an indictment of Kamala Harris. It was an indictment of America.
