A 15-year-old Mainland High School student was arrested after typing “how to kill the president” on her school-issued OneDrive account. She followed it with “im just kidding.” Behind every joke is a degree of sincerity and there’s nothing funny about joking about killing someone. This incident shows the reckless climate that’s been created where people feel comfortable treating threats against the president as humor. A school safety system flagged the words the teenager typed the same day Trump was scheduled to speak at the local Ocean Center. Police said the timing and the follow-up showed she knew a reasonable person would read the original line as a threat. The quick response to this threat is a good thing and in itself serves as a deterrent. When the school resource officer tried to detain the teenager, she resisted. She tried to leave the office, then kicked and swung her arms while being handcuffed. Officers took her into custody. Her guardian told police she has no access to weapons at home. She faces charges that include a written or electronic threat to kill or cause bodily harm, obstructing police, and resisting an officer without violence. I think the teenager needs to serve jail time. Her guardian should also be investigated to determine whether they’re providing a suitable environment. A 15-year-old doesn’t type those words and then physically resist arrest in a vacuum. Someone in her life has allowed this attitude to develop, and that should be looked at. This is the second arrest tied to threats against Trump around the same Daytona Beach visit. An adult woman was also charged after posting that she planned to bring a pistol to the rally. Both claimed they were joking. Law enforcement treated neither as a joke. Threats against the president are a federal and state crime for a reason. School monitoring software exists because schools have seen too many cases where online statements turned into real danger. The fact that a 15-year-old felt comfortable typing those words on a monitored school account, on the day of a presidential appearance, is not normal. It reflects a broader climate where violent language directed at Trump has been normalized for years in media, on campuses, and online. “Just kidding” does not erase the words or the context. Schools and police are right to treat these statements seriously instead of waiting to see what happens next. Threats like this should never be dismissed as teenage venting or political expression. The president is a protected person under the law, and every credible threat requires a response. The more people treat this as routine or funny, the more it will keep happening. Treat it seriously and with serious legal consequences.
