Pope Leo has called for “deep reflection” on the treatment of migrants in the United States.
Speaking to journalists in Castel Gandolfo, just outside Rome, the Pope said that “many people who have lived for years and years” in the US, “never causing problems”, are “deeply affected” by the current situation.
The Pope was responding to a question from a journalist concerning the fact that Catholic migrants detained in Chicago have been denied access to Holy Communion. He went on to stress the importance of protecting the “spiritual rights” of migrant detainees.

I had the honour of speaking at Christian Brothers' High School Lewisham, the school my son graduated from, and an absolutely deadly school doing incredible things for our mob.
From the moment I walked in, I was met with pride and respect for culture – Coloured Stone’s “Black Boy” playing through the speakers, and empowering signage around the school like “Deadly”, “Change the Date”, “Gadigal” and Wangal – all setting the tone for a powerful day of truth, learning and connection.
Whatu and James acknowledged Country with such pride. True role models for all of the boys who look up to these young leaders.
In my reflection, I spoke from the heart about what reconciliation means to me – and more importantly, the role the young men listening have to play at school, at home, and in community. I paid tribute to the late Brother Paul Conn, previous principal whose inclusive vision laid the foundations for this strong Aboriginal education program. His legacy lives on in every proud young Aboriginal student who walks through those gates and graduates.
Thank you to Marea, Blake and the whole team – it finally happened after all these years! And a heartfelt thank you to Jeremy Seeto, science teacher and proud Lewo Old Boy, who gifted me the most beautiful handmade book with the word DREAM folded into the pages. A true masterpiece. My heart is full.
It was also so beautiful to see a copy of a special painting that my son gifted to a school in Peru on behalf of his school when they visited. Shoutout to my niece Shekara Hartnett for her work.
