Don’t worry - your own freedom of expression includes the freedom to get things completely wrong.
The issue isn’t Sally Rooney’s political views, or even her books. It’s her stated intention to use the proceeds to fund a proscribed organisation.
A rather important distinction.
in my original post about the Sally Rooney affair I have been accused of oversimplifying what has happened. And that's fair - I did. But after going into this in more depth I realise that we end up in much the same place - books not on sale to the UK public because of the entirely unrelated activities of their author. After all who is to know whether the proceeds from books that would have been sold would actually be the money to be be donated to Palestine Action as opposed to money that Rooney has already made or is making elsewhere? Rooney btw, with scant regard for her readers, seems not to be unhappy for this to happen.
I don't imagine that the government anticipated this outcome when it produced the ban and I'm not at all sure that Faber shouldn't have taken the risk of a prosecution that probably would never have happened. The result is the same - books not available for political reasons.

UPDATE:
It appears that the Attorney General may have acted on my letter and had a discussion with the Prime Minister: he has corrected his statement in Hansard.
I hope that he will be more careful with his language in future.
At PMQs @KemiBadenoch asked the PM if he was tired of putting his foot in his mouth.
20 mins later and it’s not just another gaffe but a comment that appears to prejudge a murder investigation.
I have written to the Attorney General in the hope that she can remind the PM of his legal obligations.
The Attorney General could also seek input from the Home Secretary, who’s on record saying - only last year - that if a Labour MP made such comments “there would be repercussions”.

“They looked from journalist to Labour cheerleader, and from Labour cheerleader to journalist, and already it was impossible to say which was which.”

“British Jews are your neighbours, fellow citizens and parliamentary colleagues.
We should not have to disclaim a belief in Jewish self-determination in order to avoid being branded racist by a British political party.”

This is, as @NJ_Timothy rightly says, a major victory. But the fight isn’t over.
Ministers who promoted this appalling, now-abandoned policy remain in post. But @KarlTurnerMP, who bravely stood against it on principle, remains without the Labour whip.
That says rather a lot.
This is a major victory for everyone who fought to defend trial by jury, and Conservatives led that fight from day one.
Jury trials are an ancient English right going back to Magna Carta, so we fought hard – and I want to pay tribute to the brave Labour rebel, Karl Turner, who was treated appallingly by his party for sticking to his principles.
Now Labour have been forced to abandon their central attack on jury trials in the Crown Court.
But Labour are still restricting juries by the back door, scrapping the right to elect one and dumping those cases on magistrates whose backlog is at a record high.
Nearly 81,000 cases are stuck in the Crown Court, yet there is no commitment to get courts sitting more often.
But Labour did find time to write into law a review of how their reforms treat people of different identities.
It’s always the same with them.
64 Crown courtrooms stand empty every day. We need to get those courtrooms sitting –so we can still defend the right to a trial by jury.
I wish them both well in their important constitutional roles, upholding the rule of law.
But limiting the right to jury trial isn’t the way to tackle violence against women and girls - and it will positively undermine, not strengthen, confidence in our criminal justice system.
“The incident that occurred.”
Not technically the passive voice.
But painfully passive in every other sense.
The Chancery Division has just closed its doors for the last time. Tomorrow it reopens as Business & Property.
They call it progress. I preferred the old destination.

I disagree with @ShabanaMahmood on plenty, and think many of her policies are both misguided and counterproductive. As Shadow Attorney General, it’s part of my job to challenge the Government - including a Home Secretary who’s also a former Lord Chancellor.
But calling her an “Islamist” is ridiculous. Politics is better when we attack bad arguments, not smear people with labels and slogans.
When people speak of the political takeover of a country by Islamism, they imagine bearded sheikhs in robes.
In reality, political Islam often looks exactly like this: Oxford English, fashionable clothes and progressive rhetoric.
That is true of the Islamist @NYCMayor Mamdani and it is equally true of the Islamist @ShabanaMahmood.
I sincerely hope, for the sake of the British people, that the lunatic BDS activists who have taken over their country do not drag Britain into an abyss from which there is no way back.
Foreign Secretary -
I didn’t serve with Marco Rubio. I don’t know Marco Rubio. Marco Rubio isn’t a friend of mine.
But, Foreign Secretary - you're no Marco Rubio.

At least law students won’t have much trouble remembering the name of this case.
