I write about Afghanistan from an Afghan perspective; politics, history, society, economy and the regional powers shaping its future.
Not everything happening in Afghanistan fits neatly into black and white. Most of it exists somewhere in the grey. That is the space I am interested in.
I explore what is actually happening inside the country, why it is happening, how we got here, where Afghanistan might be going and, where possible, how we can help steer it in a better direction.
Expect analysis, history, geopolitics, uncomfortable questions and occasionally some optimism.

Herein lies the problem, when the state and its touts label anyone who says he’s a Mehsud by tribe as a TTP fighter and then take the liberty to mistranslate what is being said. He complains about his living condition and they claim the Taliban willingly published a TTP fighter naming his faction to the interior ministry. Zero integrity, full on racisim.

There is a certain irony in what is happening to Pakistan.
For years, Islamabad weaponized trade routes and economic dependence to pressure Afghanistan.
Now, Iran is using the same playbook against them by threatening to redirect LPG exports and charge Pakistan higher prices over Islamabad siding with Iran’s enemies.
How the tables have turned.

Now Iran is threatening even higher prices starting Monday.
Pakistan may have one of the region’s largest militaries, but how much economic pressure can it actually absorb when someone else starts weaponizing trade routes and economic dependence against it?
YES, because every intelligence agency puts its secret missions on official letters with signatures and stamps.
How stupid do you have to be to believe this?

The exclusion of young people living in Afghanistan from a position claiming to represent Afghan youth is inexcusable. Consultation does not equal representative authority. The diaspora representative still decides who to consult, which concerns merit attention, and how those accounts are interpreted and presented internationally. This is all done through their own lens and experiences. It is essentially a form of gatekeeping, not a substitute for direct representation.
“security risks”: What precisely is the danger in discussing issues like Pakistani airstrikes, unemployment, floods, environmental degradation, economic development, or the everyday needs of Afghan youth? Where genuine risks exist, why deny young Afghans the right to assess those risks and decide for themselves whether to participate?
The treatment of Madina Mahboobi after her UN appearance also raises an uncomfortable question about whether the concern is solely for the safety of Afghans inside the country, or whether certain perspectives become unwelcome when they challenge established political narratives.
Visa restrictions and travel difficulties are obstacles that institutions committed to meaningful representation should seek to overcome, not use to justify exclusion. Select qualified young Afghans from within the country, advocate for their participation, and pursue remote arrangements when necessary. Otherwise, the process risks preserving international platforms for voices outside Afghanistan while denying those living with the consequences of international decisions the opportunity to speak for themselves.
Replying to @purely_Michele @AfghanYouthRep
Thank you for sharing this important concern. Selecting youth representatives from inside Afghanistan would pose serious security risks for them. There are also significant visa barriers and travel restrictions.
For these reasons, applicants must currently reside outside Afghanistan. However, the representative’s main responsibility is to consult Afghan youth inside the country and bring their voices to international platforms.

The IEA's single decision to punish Pakistan for weaponizing trade routes has been their best decision to date. Nobody expected it. They did it.

The Afghan Youth Representative to the UN is supposed to represent a generation facing a multitude of challenges inside Afghanistan, yet not a single young person residing in the country is eligible to apply.
This is not simply a selection process that favors the diaspora. It is the complete exclusion of the population whose interests the position claims to represent.

There have been many reports that Pakistan is arming Afghans to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan. Now there are reports that the Pakistani military is recruiting Afghans to fight against anti-Pakistan insurgents. As things currently stand, relations between #Afghanistan and #Pakistan are likely to get much worse.
