1/ My earliest memories are of the Lord, of prayer, and of wanting to be a monk. Clearly, that is not the path my impetuous youth chose. Here is what He did with it instead...
2/ I started seminary. It was interrupted. I learned a new skill and became a nurse, and by God's mercy that work has saved lives. At the time it felt like a detour. Looking back... it was formation.
3/ I've come to see ministry as concentric circles. Your birth family. Your household. Your friends and coworkers. Then the public at large. Each circle you tend opens the next.
4/ I used to think I had to finish one circle before I could move to the next. I was wrong. Christ works in all of them at once, to varying degree. Every hour counted on this earth is a chance for grace to flow through you to someone else.
Imagine for a moment two birds in the same hard wind.
One is pushed to the ground. The other rises on it.
Same wind. Different wings.
Pain held alone keeps you on the ground. Set it before you, look at it with someone you trust... and you find you have different wings.
Burnout confession: I didn't know how to stop.
Multiple jobs. Teaching at a university. A postgraduate program. Three hours of sleep a night. On paper, it all looked amazing.
Then came the stabbing chest pain, and I couldn't chew on my left side. I'm a nurse. I knew what that could mean. How long did it take me to call my dentist? A MONTH.
Being educated didn't help. It only made the lies I told myself more convincing.
If you are grinding on caffeine and adrenaline... STOP. Slow down. You are not invincible, and the people who need you can't afford for you to pretend you are.
Update: I now have been told by my two year old I must hold the pink bear. This is what happens when you’ve had seven daughters.
