All my art I've done over these past couple weeks for the #SaveMassEffect movement. I've been kinda anxious that I've not been contributing enough but looking at it all in one place; yeah I've been going kinda nutso I guess. But I hope it's helped even if just a bit. (1/3)

The solution is Japanese companies having strict guidelines via contract that clearly state translations must be as faithful as possible to the original script, with no censorship or unnecessary changes under the false pretense of "cultural adaption" or else the localization teams face penalties.
They need to hire skilled translators who are willing to set their egos, preferences, and politics aside and do the job correctly, even if they have to pay a little more. Perhaps they could even hire Japanese people fluent in English rather than outsourcing the process to largely untrustworthy Western teams.
The entire industry needs a revamp.

It's really interesting to see how many people are legitimately surprised that other languages aren't 1:1 to English in structure and speaking conventions. It only sounds weird in English because people don't talk like that in English. It sounds perfectly normal in Japanese.

Localizers inject their own headcanons and rewrites far too often. They change entire character personalities for no reason. Some even gloat on sns about it. That's what people complain about. If you can't translate something without respecting the original source, you aren't a good translator. One to one translation and Japanese being different from English are all excuses. It's not impossible, it's ego.
Sincerely from someone who translated their own game to Japanese TWICE and regularly does Jp - Eng at work

The localization debate seems to reflect the tension between appealing to “serious” vs “casual” anime fans. There’s a sizable contingent of fans who will “just learn what Japanese words mean”, and think that’s part of the fun of watching anime.

I still don't understand how we went from "save the turtles, protect the environment, stop global warming" to "let's build datacenters"

“If you want to learn Japanese culture, watch a documentary” you sound so haughty for someone who are not reliable enough to translate confidential documents or allowed to write for political outlets because you know if you put slangs and memes in there you will get reprimanded.

Dude westerners are actually so damn dumb. And stubborn. Like you get too "woke" you piss and shit yourself and cry racism the moment you disagree with something. Maybe not everything is about racism and about you.

I never thought I would be defending the Brazilians... but they have the largest population of Japanese outside of Japan.
Like there's a better chance that Brazilian complaining about localization is ethnically Japanese than "VodkaLover52" is.

Tornadoes must not be all that dangerous because nobody from Russia has ever complained about one
Tsunamis must not be a big deal, never heard a single complaint from people in the middle of Canada
Hypothermia? Yeah right, ever heard of a case of Hypothermia in Jamaica?

Something funny about the Helios localization thing is that most people defending it are- quite literally, the just defending it because people they don't like are against it, so they need to oppose that.
"I'm going to eat shit because it owns the chuds"
That's it.

Localizers are juvenile beings that simply cannot help but insert stupid memes and references that make them feel like quirky creative legends in their own minds.
This nonsense only appeals to the lowest forms of life who have no real respect for Japanese media or faithful translation. They do not care beyond thinking it's "funny" and/or relatable via Western brain rot.

When you complain about localization, remember that this is who youre arguing with

People defending Helios "localisation" will look at you with a straight face & tell you that "toreppi" "ojou", the "cchi" sufix or "paisen" were too hard to get for english audiences and impossible to translate so using "BB flo", "Rubae", "Palmz", "MemmyB" or "Ogurizz" is better
