Writing for @educationgadfly, @Dale_Chu asks: What happened to TFA?
“The more TFA asked people to agree on issues beyond student achievement, the harder it became to sustain the big tent that had once made it so powerful.”

That’s right! The state tests create a perverse incentive to have our kids in front of screens even more.
That is why we are calling for a return to hand-written state tests.
Banning YouTube gets headlines, but NYC Council members are pointing to a deeper frustration: computer-based state tests forcing daily screen reliance in early grades.

Last week, I had a chance to visit the @Sept11Memorial on a quiet, rain-soaked evening. It’s hard to believe 25 years have passed. Harder still to fathom that an entire generation has grown up since that day, learning about it as history rather than as a memory.

+1 to this entire article and many of these lessons apply to state accountability systems as well.
No Child Left Behind has been gone for more than a decade. So why are we still arguing about it?
Because we may have drawn the wrong conclusions.
In my latest for @educationgadfly, I explain three lessons NCLB still has to teach us.

When teachers, hiring managers, and college professors no longer trust that a high school diploma demonstrates proficiency in key academic skills, the solution needs to happen during traditional K-12 education, not after or alongside it. CTE (Career and Technical Education) depends on the strong foundation of essential reading and math ability.

What does a high school diploma actually signal?
@Dale_Chu argues that if states want stronger workforce and college pathways, they need to start by making the diploma mean something again.

This is a great set of essays on a topic that doesn't have an obvious right answer. Kudos to @Dale_Chu and Fordham for hosting all three.
Here's hoping these conversations gain traction in my state!
Apparently I struck a nerve. 😊
I’m grateful to @avveen, @jennvranek, and Khaled Ismail for taking the time to engage with my essay on through-year assessment. Each is a thoughtful contributor to this issue, and I encourage anyone interested in the debate to read their responses alongside the original piece.

Apprenticeships are worth pursuing. But policymakers, employers, and educators should temper their enthusiasm with patience and persistence, recognizing that cultural norms, institutional inertia, and finite resources limit what can realistically be achieved in the short term.

Great piece by @Dale_Chu on why we should be cautious about the scalability of apprenticeships.
The apprenticeships pitch always sounds the same: “Win-win for students and employers.”
If it were that simple, they’d already be everywhere.
So what’s the catch?
In my latest for @educationgadfly, I dig into what’s holding them back.
