2023 was the warmest year on record globally by a large margin. Another dark red stripe gets added, though I think I need a new colour. #ShowYourStripes

I made a new graph of global 2-meter surface temperatures that includes data back to 1940. Just stunning. We now live on a planet that human civilization has never experienced before.

This is the hottest we have ever observed. The Mediterranean is now completely outside all previous records. We have never measured this level of heat across the basin at any time of year. It is only July. We usually see the annual maximum in August.

Not to be alarmist but…this is what’s called a six-sigma event, now unfolding in Antarctica. Otherwise known as a once-in-7.5-million-year event. Hang onto your hats. HT @EliotJacobson

As part of the #PlasticFreeGoleta initiative, mylar/foil balloons cannot be sold in the #CityofGoleta or used in public spaces under our new ordinance. Balloons are known to be bad for the environment, harm wildlife, and cause power outages. Thank you for doing your part!

The biodiversity stripes - there's been a 69% decline in biodiversity since 1970 and an 83% decline of freshwater biodiversity.
The biodiversity stripes highlight the global decline in species abundance. They are already starting conversations about the nature crisis. Created by @findingnature Lots of designs: biodiversitystripes.info

In a nutshell: we need to turn off the hose as fast as we can, enlarge the drain at all speed, all while learning how to swim + help others learn as well.

Here are the big takeaways from the @IPCC_CH Synthesis Report released today. First, climate change has already caused widespread and substantial losses to almost every aspect of human life on this planet, and the impacts on future generations depend on the choices we make NOW.
