New work: I helped @WIRED create this map of 78 videos of appalling police misconduct during the George Floyd protests in 2020.
A $13 million settlement with the City of NY is the latest in a string of legal wins for protesters who were helped by a video-analysis tool that smashes the “bad apple” myth. Dozens of videos shared with WIRED show how the legal team built their case. wired.trib.al/toBrjwA

🚨An investigation by @LHreports and @WIRED looked into an algorithm in #Rotterdam used to detect welfare fraud. The results are extremely troubling--the sophisticated algorithm is deeply flawed and discriminatory

What if your government gave an algorithm the power to assign you a “risk score”? What if the risk score could determine the course of your life? What if that algorithm was full of flaws and biases? Welcome to the suspicion machine wired.trib.al/ubJbRnO

NEW: Every year a government algorithm decides if thousands of welfare recipients will be investigated for fraud. Teaming up w/ @LHreports, we obtained the algorithm and found that it discriminates based on ethnicity and gender. Heres the story:

In a series beginning today with @WIRED we take apart a Suspicion Machine in a major European city and tell the stories of the people whose lives were turned upside down by the biassed risk scores it generated
