I was challenged by @scserendipity1 at ESMO to share with him my favorite 8 song playlist with a few words of explanations. If you know him, you will also know that you just can’t ignore that request. 😂 I will thoroughly date myself with this but as I sometimes tell younger and much smarter and more accomplished colleagues, I have something on you that you can’t match. I grew up in the 80s. OK, here it comes… 1. Heaven knows I’m miserable now - The Smiths. This opened the indie music door for me I am ever since a die hard The Smiths fan. 2. ⁠That’s Entertainment- The Jam. The most perfect dysphoric 80s song there is. 3. ⁠In The Neighborhood- Tom Waits. The man (and his wife, Kathleen Brennan) just can’t do anything wrong. Seriously under appreciated artists. 4. ⁠Nous de la lune - Young Gods. Who doesn’t like Swiss industrial rock? Play it very loud. 5. ⁠Red right hand - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Admittedly, I am a groupie… 6. ⁠Birthday - The Sugarcubes. My childhood next door neighbor I never dared to talk to. The most unique voice in rock. 7. ⁠Svefn-g-englar (transl. Sleepwalkers) - Sigur Rós One of the most unique and beautiful music videos there is. 8. ⁠Shine on you crazy diamond - Pink Floyd. Of course, one needs to know about Syd Barrett to fully understand. Not sure a better song about mental disorders and addiction has ever been written.
