Today @FP_Champagne tabled Budget 2026. For @CDNInnovators members, the biggest item is the new Canada Growth Incentive, pairing a capital gains exemption of up to $15M on investments in eligible Canadian companies with an expanded rollover for founders who reinvest here.
There’s more for innovators too. Extending SR&ED to commercialization, changes to how Canadians benefit from university research, and new IP supports all respond to issues our members raise with us regularly. The design details of the Growth Incentive will matter a great deal.
Canada still needs a clearer approach to data, strategic standards, financial infrastructure and IP. We start tomorrow at 11 AM ET with a budget debrief on the exemption, the rollover and what the rest of the budget means for innovators.

The politics around bike lanes may be heated. But the broader public view on road safety is not.
86% of Ontarians say roads should be designed to be safe for everyone.
And 72% say proper cycling infrastructure makes roads safer for all road users.

Great piece. We are digging deeper into the data on 'Canadian' corporate ownership and control, starting from public procurement data. The new Buy Canadian policy does have encouraging consideration for Canadian content/value-added elements, with some key details to be clarified.
The federal government's "Buy Canadian" policy redefines Canadian to include foreign-controlled firms operating through local subsidiaries, raising questions about who actually controls Canada’s defence industry. @erinotoole and @EliotPence investigate: thewalrus.ca/carneys-buy-can…

Canadian innovators need the freedom to test and develop new ideas without unnecessary barriers.
Budget 2025 introduces regulatory sandboxes across government, allowing new ideas to be tested free from outdated rules and red tape, while helping government design smart regulations that protect Canadians’ health and safety.
Under this framework Canadian innovative products will reach market faster, and be better regulated when they do.
As the House rises to wrap the session, @CADInnovators is watching several outstanding legislative measures relevant to Canada’s innovation ecosystem, including a proposed amendment in Budget 2025 to enable regulatory sandboxes across government. 1/3

CCI has previously highlighted the value of regulatory sandboxes, including in A Mandate to Innovate. They offer a structured way to introduce regulatory flexibility, reduce uncertainty, and allow innovators and regulators to test new approaches while maintaining oversight. 2/3
This authority would complement existing federal programs like IDEaS, Innovative Solutions Canada, and the CAN Health Network, strengthening the framework that supports innovation and timely market entry.
