ANTIDEPRESSANT WITHDRAWAL INJURY is a serious neurological brain injury that happens even when you stop an SSRI following “standard” doctor tapering advice. After long-term use, the brain & nervous system adapt and change but the rushed 2-4 week one-size-fits-all tapers doctors still use are dangerously fast and actively causing brain injuries on a massive scale. Right now, thousands of people are being harmed simply by doing exactly what their doctors tell them and end up with long-term neurological damage and years of disability. The system gaslights victims, denies the harm, and hides the truth. This rivals the opioid crisis. If you've been affected, you're not alone. Share your story. #antidepressantwithdrawal #pssd
My experience with psych med withdrawal/akathisia from lexapro. There are over 600 stories at prescribed-harm.com now. Worse than mine. Like my dad’s. If you want you can add your story, if you’ve been injured by medications, and I’ll add to it to the site too.

The term “antidepressant withdrawal” can be deeply misleading. It suggests a temporary fleeting reaction to stopping a drug. For some people, the rapid linear ( unscientific ) couple weeks-long tapers clinicians still use today can trigger nervous system damage known as protracted withdrawal injury, leading to years of debilitating symptoms and disability.

An estimated 30–44 million Americans take SSRIs. Many for years (median duration 5 years; Ward et al., 2025). Longer-term use is associated with a greater risk of severe and prolonged withdrawal (Horowitz et al., 2025). With Tens of millions taking SSRIs and ZERO standardized, evidence-based safe off-ramp, even a small percentage experiencing severe withdrawal/ withdrawal injury upon attempting to stop could mean hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people affected.

Psychiatric drugs are first and foremost psychoactive substances... In that sense, psychiatric drugs belong to the same broad family as alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine – substances that alter how we feel, think, and behave, without correcting any underlying defect.

This 23-year-old just exposed a massive conspiracy by the FDA and Eli Lilly to cover up the truth about SSRIs. “People have been screaming into the void about this.” “People have ended their lives.” “No one’s listening to us.” Bookmark this. Lauren Friedman revealed that Zoloft left her permanently unable to feel love, emotional connection, or sexual pleasure. And she is far from alone. “There has been seemingly an intentional cover-up by pharmaceutical industry.” “Prozac … was interfering with normal sexual development for kids who were prescribed these at a young age.” European regulators reported this to Eli Lilly. “Eli Lilly responded … ‘We will run clinical trials to see if this is true or not, we just need approval of the drug first in childhood use.’” “They approved it.” “The tests were never done.” “And then just still gave it to children.” “The FDA has known about this for decades.” “Senator Chuck Grassley … wrote to the FDA.” “The FDA responded and said that there isn’t sufficient evidence to suggest that this is because of the SSRI.” “In 2018 … there was a petition that was submitted to the FDA begging the FDA to add this to labels.” “The FDA, they were supposed to respond in … 180 days.” “They never did.” “2024, there was a lawsuit against the FDA for ignoring this.” “They threw it out on a technicality.” “One of the really sad parts about this is a lot of the young people who signed the petition in 2018 went on to kill themselves.” “A young woman … wrote a really heartfelt note to the FDA saying, ‘I feel like my human rights have been violated.’” “‘I can no longer feel joy or love, have sex.’” “‘My life has been destroyed.’” “She ended up killing herself shortly after.” “It should be pretty obvious that living without the ability to feel pleasure sexually and emotionally, or feel love, is unlivable.” “We’re put on Earth to experience love and connection.” “No one’s looking into this.” “For me, had the label been updated in 2018, I would have never taken it.” “I took it in 2022.” @lololizzle @theisabelb

It’s about the quality of the warning too, it needs to be sincere. We’re talking about losing a bodily function, potentially for life, with no understanding of how to get it back. There should be a written consent form encompassing: - PSSD - PAWS - Suicidality ⬆️ - Akathisia
How can global updates be this far apart? In the UK, the MHRA has just strengthened warnings on SSRIs for suicidal thoughts/behaviors and persistent sexual dysfunction (PSSD). Risks that "are not new," they say — after years of patient pressure. Meanwhile in Australia, the PBAC (Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee) is pushing to lift prescribing restrictions and expand PBS subsidies so more antidepressants can be handed out for a wider range of uses. Wider net. More access. Same drugs. One country slowly admits the risks and tightens the messaging. Another widens the net and makes them cheaper and easier to prescribe. UK MHRA: "Hey, maybe we should finally warn people properly that SSRIs can cause suicidal thoughts and lasting sexual dysfunction. Risks aren’t new, apparently." Australia’s PBAC: "Cool story. Let’s make them cheaper and easier to prescribe for more things." www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/pro…

The UK is updating antidepressant warnings to recognize PSSD (post-SSRI sexual dysfunction) and acknowledge that sexual side effects can continue long after stopping treatment. It's time for the FDA to follow suit. But sadly this still isn't enough. These injuries extend far beyond sexual dysfunction, causing devastating, lasting cognitive and emotional impairments. People deserve to be fully informed about what they are risking before making a decision that could potentially  affect them for the rest of their lives. @PSSDNetwork

Last year, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced an expert review into #antidepressants, driven by patient concerns. The review is now concluded. During the review, patients and their families worked with the MHRA to share their concerns—the outcome was to strengthen existing warnings relating to suicidal thoughts and behaviours, and persistent sexual dysfunction after stopping antidepressants. Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (#PSSD) is acknowledged in the wording.

Where is the national outrage for stories like this? SSRIs kill. They destroy health, lives, and families. Nobody is being warned of the risks. Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD) is a condition that must be acknowledged. There must be justice for this young girl who lost her life. There must be research done for those holding on to hope. All of these people are suffering in silence with this condition and are in survival mode every day.

I remember back when we were fighting for the FDA’s antidepressant suicide warnings, groups were emerging with stories of how these drugs had devastated marriages, relationships, and intimacy. Sadly, their experiences were largely dismissed or ignored. I often wonder now if some of those people were describing what we’re finally beginning to recognize as #PSSD. How many years have these voices gone unheard? Thanks @NIHDirector_Jay for speaking out about the harms of antidepressants. If you or someone has a story, please submit to antidepressantinjury.com
Surreal to see the NIH Director @NIHDirector_Jay talking about PSSD—an injury long dismissed, with victims told by doctors their antidepressant induced harm wasn’t real. For years it was relegated to Reddit forums and hidden corners of the internet: an abandoned community of devastated lives desperately seeking answers, with no one listening. These are real people unjustly left to suffer, stripped of fundamental parts of their humanity. We cannot leave them behind. We urgently need research into the underlying mechanisms and a path toward recovery. #pssd @PSSDNetwork @elliotbewick @lololizzle

ICYMI: For years, people tapering psychiatric drugs have described a “windows and waves” pattern of withdrawal: a crash after a dose cut, then a stretch of settling if the dose is held. Clinicians have often interpreted that crash as the original condition returning, but a new study followed people through a six-month antidepressant taper and found exactly the same wave pattern. Led by Michael Hengartner (@HengartnerMP) with Mark Horowitz (@markhoro), the research found people tapering reported their mood dropped after each reduction, then eased when the dose stayed put—even at very low doses. Notably, the mood changes were aligned with physical complaints. Once those physical complaints were taken into account, the rise in depression scores was no longer significant. That will not surprise you if you have lived it, but the research is still worth reading. You can find coverage of it including a link to the original paper via the link below.

"I think talking about these drugs causing injury is not unreasonable because of the length of time that the symptoms go on." Finnish therapist @TuominenPiia asks Professor @joannamoncrieff if “injury” is an appropriate term for long-lasting antidepressant harms.

Let’s see if @FDA follows suit on warning about PSSD. History has a way of repeating itself. Back in 2003, the UK led the way in warning about antidepressants and the risk of suicidal behavior. The FDA didn’t require antidepressant black-box suicide warnings until 2004. Twenty-three years later, are we watching history repeat itself? @lololizzle @PSSDNetwork

We applaud the UK’s MHRA for implementing these long-overdue measures to inform patients of the risks of suicidality when initiating antidepressant treatment or adjusting dosages, as well as the risk of persistent sexual dysfunction. We urge the U.S. @FDA to follow suit and, alongside other @HHSGov agencies, prioritize helping those who have already been harm. Years-long sufferers of PSSD @PSSDNetwork and protracted withdrawal deserve acknowledgment, answers, and, most importantly, effective treatments.
The MHRA is introducing a series of new measures to strengthen how risks associated with antidepressant medicines are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Read the full drug safety update here: brnw.ch/21x6qlr
