My last day at NPR was yesterday. I'm heartbroken about not working with my favorite humans. But I'm excited about what's next (more soon)!
My last story aired today, it's about Musk, xAI and Memphis. I see it as a harbinger of what's to come...

We got to see the redacted documents in one of the AG lawsuits against TikTok.
They're filled with employees speaking candidly about a host of dangers for children on the app.
With @BobbyAllyn and @sylviaruthg

I went to Memphis to see Musk's xAI supercomputer and learn how it got fast-tracked.
This whole story is bananas.
The city council didn't know, the utility company signed NDAs, it doesn't have permits for methane gas generators... And all this is for Grok

Awful. The legislator behind the CA bill meant to create a mechanism for big tech to share ad revenue with journalists whose work they profit from is touting a deal to gut the bill—and saying it supports CA journalists.
Read the release. The only group not quoted is journalists.
yesssss let's do this

I listened to this piece this morning and I was like - this should be what everyone is talking about re; AI and Google. More excellent work by @daraKerr and @alexhanna.
Thanks to @darakerr for talking with me about the high climate cost of generative AI, Google's reneging on its climate goals, and the real existential crisis facing us on NPR Morning Edition today.

Dropping by to say I got public records, internal emails, between Uber and Lyft’s lobbyists and the governor and mayor’s offices in Minnesota. They revealed an intense lobbying playbook the companies use to thwart minimum wage laws npr.org/2024/06/17/nx-s1-494…
Councilmember @robin4mpls (who introduced the min wage ordinances) on the lobbying: “Every single day there are several articles, interviews in the press, basically demonizing our actions and creating a lot of confusion for the public around what our policy actually accomplished”
For more info on Uber and Lyft lobbying, here’s a thorough report by @NelpNews and a great overview article by @KatieJWells

NPR's @DaraKerr follows a hunch and reveals a tech billionaire's vast acquisition of land in Hawaii. He make clear with some menace that he was tracking her and had personal information about her family.
That tech mogul is Time magazine owner Marc Benioff.
A must read deep-dive piece of reporting by/from NPR's @darakerr. "During that call, he also mentioned he knew the exact area where I was staying. Unnerved, I asked how he knew..."

For NPR, I spent months trying to figure out why Salesforce CEO Benioff bought 100s of acres of land in Hawaii. He used anon LLCs to buy it, but in a small town locals still noticed. To get thru reporting, I read many great articles about Benioff and Hawaii, so I'm sharing some:
This story by @jmooallem about Larry Ellison owning 98% of Lanai gets at how hard it can be to report about billionaires in rural Hawaii. When one person holds so much more sway than everyone else, people are scared to talk. Also, it’s just a joy to read nytimes.com/2014/09/28/magaz…
