PART 1/6
In December 1968, two teenagers were found murdered inside a parked car on Lake Herman Road in California.
David Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16, had gone out on a date. They never returned home.
Their killer disappeared into the darkness.
At the time, nobody knew that this was the beginning of one of America's most infamous unsolved criminal cases.

PART 5/6
On October 11, 1969, San Francisco taxi driver Paul Stine was murdered in the Presidio Heights neighbourhood.
This time, the killer had attacked in a residential area of a major city.
Days later, a letter arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle containing a piece of Stine's bloodstained shirt.
The writer mocked the police investigation and continued sending messages to newspapers.
The correspondence transformed the case into a national obsession.

PART 6/6
The Zodiac Killer eventually sent several more letters and coded messages.
In November 1969, he mailed another cipher containing 340 characters.
For decades, professional cryptographers and amateur codebreakers struggled to understand it.
Then, in December 2020, an international team finally cracked the message.
But there was a problem.
The decoded message did not reveal the killer's identity.
Five people are officially associated with his confirmed murders, while two others survived his attacks.
Despite decades of investigation, the man behind the Zodiac identity has never been conclusively identified.
More than half a century later, the case remains one of America's most infamous unsolved serial murder investigations.
