Cosmic neutrinos with extremely high energies are very rare, so an enormous volume of ice is needed to observe an adequate number of collisions. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory covers an entire cubic kilometre and was finished in 2011. Researchers soon discovered the first high-energy neutrinos and, a few years later, could publish their discovery of neutrinos that must originate far outside our solar system. The search for the universe’s neutrino sources could begin in earnest.
Francis Halzen has received the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

I am so happy today for Francis Halzen and for the IceCube collaboration. The Nobel Prize for Francis, for IceCube, and for high-energy neutrino astronomy is very special for me, both scientifically and personally.
An interesting result from the @lzdarkmatter experiment. With XLZD, we would expect to see many more events, should these turn out to be from dark matter interactions!
Dark matter makes up roughly 85% of the mass in the universe but has never been directly detected. Now, a new analysis has recorded a single particle interaction that is the most compelling hint of dark matter reported from @lzdarkmatter to date. livermorelab.info/4zWMimT

Today, July 10, at the #IDM2024 in L’Aquila (IT), Fei Gao, from Tsingua Universitiy, reported this result: we can say that XENONnT enters into the so-called “neutrino fog”.This is a great achievement!
