Formal volunteering has stagnated for some time, and took a bad hit during Covid. So today's new research showing one in ten people plan to formally volunteer next year is great news. If all those people did so, it would mean an additional 5.7mn volunteering who aren't today.

In our national accounts, the charity and non-profit sector's raw GVA is estimated to be £16bn.
But they miss out volunteering, which add £20bn
They don't account for low staff pay, which adds £1.6bn
Or for the fact that generating profit isn't the aim, which adds £1bn.

ALT Quote card with a picture of Jamie O'Halloran Economist at PBE saying "Charities and non-profits play a vital role in our society. Yet the way the sector is currently valued in official national accounts has a number of weaknesses, which mean that less than half of the sector’s total value is captured. With just small tweaks, we see drastic changes in how the sector is valued."
