“No one is prescribing antidepressants just because someone went through a breakup, lost a job, or lost someone close.” I can say with confidence that this is categorically untrue across a range of different countries. Not only that, it is common practice to be described SSRIs without any diagnosis after a 5 min appointment.
People have always gone through hard times. Severe depression has been around for a long time too. What is different now is that we can better tell when ordinary sadness has turned into something that lasts and gets in the way of daily life. No one is prescribing antidepressants just because someone went through a breakup, lost a job, or lost someone close. Those are painful situations, and people usually need time, support and sometimes counselling. Major depression looks different. The low mood or loss of interest sticks around, sleep and appetite change, energy drops, thinking gets harder, and the person struggles to manage ordinary tasks. The risk of suicide also goes up. Trials with large numbers of people show antidepressants work better than placebo for moderate to severe depression. The improvement is not the same for everyone, and some people don’t respond, but quite a few do when the medicine is chosen carefully and reviewed. Therapy helps as well, and many patients do best with both. Grief and ordinary sadness need room. Severe depression usually needs treatment. Calling them the same thing leaves a lot of people without useful options.

I texted my children that we got the puppy they’ve been begging me for and sent them a link with pictures. 🐶When they clicked on the link, it took them to a webpage that said YOU’RE GROUNDED. They’ll be spending the weekend retaking our family’s cybersecurity training course.

October 22, 1989 Five days after the devastating Loma Prieta/Bay Area earthquake, the 49ers host the Patriots at Stanford Stadium — the only regular season NFL game ever played at the venue. The damaged Candlestick Park was under repair. San Francisco prevails on a reflective afternoon, 37-20. Tragically, talented 49ers safety Jeff Fuller suffers a career-ending spinal injury.

Hang in there, Your purpose is still being defined. Things are hard/confusing af rn but we promise you aren’t alone in feeling that way. Don’t let social apps make you feel like the odd man/woman out. Truth is, most people cappin & are just as lost but have an image to upkeep.

it takes them exactly 15 minutes to write a script. 15 fucking minutes to destroy the rest of your life. the doctor clocks out, goes home to his family and sleeps just fine. meanwhile im 42, bedridden, using a razor blade and a jewlery scale to measure 0.14mg of a drug that is literally poisoning me. just so my chest doesn't explode from akathisia. they threw 30+ meds at me. rapid tapers, cold turkeys. fried my central nervous sytem into severe kindling. and when my body started rejecting the toxicity, they just shrugged and wrote "treatment resistant" on my chart to cover their own ass. its total bullshit. you didnt fail to treat a disease, you manufactured a severe brain injury and left me to burn alive in it. #akathisia #prescribedharm #benzowithdrawal
