Just got back from Alabama and South Carolina, supporting Democratic candidates running up and down the ballot. This election isn’t left vs. right. It’s right vs. wrong. It’s about families who can’t afford health care, farmers crushed by high diesel prices and tariffs, and veterans and military families watching their services get cut. Alabama Democratic Congressman Shomari Figures rallied with New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, former Montana Senator Jon Tester, and Alabama Democratic nominee for Gov. Doug Jones on Thursday in Dothan, Alabama. They drew a huge, standing-only crowd of 400-500 people in a county that Trump won by 48 points in 2024. Locals told Mother Jones it was the largest rally for Democrats they’ve seen in Dothan in decades.
The turnout is a sign of how a blue wave could reach even deeply red areas. After the Supreme Court effectively destroyed the Voting Rights Act in the Louisiana v. Callais decision in late April, Alabama Republicans redrew Figures’ district to make it more Republican, even taking out his hometown of Mobile. But Figures is fighting back, and his race remains unexpectedly competitive.
Locals in Dothan said the redistricting in Alabama is motivating Democrats to get to the polls in higher numbers. “It just really rallied us and motivated us to even get more votes, get more people out to the polls,” said one retired educator.
