Democratization is the enduring task of America. It's what it has always needed to do, and that remains true today.
Fascinating & timely. "I want us to ask how current disenfranchisement projects are trying to reconceive of what political community looks like in the United States, or who ‘the people’ are in America." @DavidAlexBatema

My paper “Did Slavery Impede the Growth of American Capitalism? Two Natural Experiments Using Farm Values per Acre” has now been revised. An event study of abolition and an RDD of the free-slave state border both suggest that slavery raised farm values in the South. 1/16

Signature verification on mail in ballots is, paradoxically, even dumber since it cuts out the step of “well let me try it again sometimes I just do a swirl”
This happened to me in 2022. Took a while but got there in the end.

Nevada’s secretary of state, seeing high number of rejected ballots in Clark and Washoe, says one of the biggest issues is that the signatures of younger voters don’t always match what’s on their driver’s licenses: “It’s mostly the fact that young people don’t have signatures these days. And when they did register to vote through the automatic voter registration process, they signed a digital pad at D.M.V., and that became their license signature.” nytimes.com/live/2024/11/05/…

Holy fucking shit. Elon Musk's legal defense to why his $1M giveaway wasn't an illegal lottery/sweepstakes under Pennsylvania law is ... "ignore everything Elon said about this being random; we actually carefully selected the winners." 🤯 reuters.com/legal/judge-weig…

Given the volume of extant scholarship and journalism on the administrative and legal dismantling of faculty governance for decades, this is would be an embarrassing story to publish in a high school newspaper.

BREAKING: Harvard Libraries suspended ~25 faculty members from entering Widener Library for two weeks after they held a silent “study-in” protest there last week — an extraordinary sanction by Harvard against its own faculty. @neilhshah15 reports. thecrimson.com/article/2024/…

Rep. Nick LaLota, running for reelection in up-for-grabs NY-01, was one of the signers of this letter, demanding an explanation from the Naval Academy for inviting NYU historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat to give a history department lecture, after pressure from Heritage Foundation because of her anti-Trump opinions. Ben-Ghiat told The Baltimore Banner her planned lecture was not going to mention Trump or contemporary politics at all, but rather was about what happens to militaries under authoritarian rule. The letter from the Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee echoed Heritage Foundation fellows, and editorials in the Heritage Foundation's The Daily Signal.

As controversies go, it was easy to miss this one. It all took place within the conservative media ecosystem. But it could foreshadow what might happen to the U.S. service academies if Trump is elected next month. thebaltimorebanner.com/opini… – at Annapolis Neck, MD

because no one cares about canadian politics it’s very hard to explain the strangeness of what’s going on. The government says there are sitting parliament members actively colluding with Russian agents. But they can’t release their names so as not to compromise intel methods.

Feels surreal the way elites in US media, universities, business, etc go after Gaza activists. Just flagrantly violating the exact norms and rights—like honesty, due process, tolerance of different views, good faith, and impartiality—that they claim to care about.
Cornell admin has used a series of dishonest substitutions in making case agnst @MomodouTaal. Phrase "any means necessary" stands in use of such means; brushing past police stands in for assault; noise stands in for physical harm; and finally MT stands in for other students.
