Grip strength predicts mortality better than blood pressure in a study of 139,691 adults. But a genetic analysis of 195,180 people found that inheriting a stronger grip doesn't extend life. No trial has tested grip training. Are people training was is simply a readout of health?
I've become wary of round numbers in health advice, like 13 years, 10,000 steps or 300 mg. Data rarely lands on a round number, so the question is this unproven history becoming fact, a guess, or rounding? None is data driven.
A drug can move a biomarker exactly as designed and still do nothing for the patient. Drug developers learned that the hard way and expensively. Supplement marketing mostly hasn't or realized they aren't accountable.
Every liquid biopsy company is building a more sensitive test.
Sangeeta Bhatia is working on the other variable: the signal.
Early tumors shed almost no DNA. Make the assay 10x better and you’re still reading noise. So her lab engineers the tumor to produce a readout - synthetic biomarkers you can catch in urine, at home.
The money is on the measurement side. The upside may be on the signal side.
Drugs that raise HDL have been tested repeatedly. Torcetrapib raised it 72% and deaths went up 58%. Evacetrapib raised it 130% with no change in events. People who inherit high HDL aren't protected either. HDL tracks cardiovascular health without causing it.
Treasury’s draft COINS rule treats a Chinese biosimilar plant like a hypersonic missile program.
It won’t slow China biotech. It just ensures Americans don’t own any of it.
Licensing isn’t covered, so the molecules still flow West. Non-US capital takes the upside.
Really enjoyed the conversation with @DWeisburd! Always fun talking about building companies!

🚀 What does it REALLY take to build 7 biotech unicorns? 🦄
🎙️ I just dropped an exclusive podcast episode featuring @DavidBerry26, famously called the “Elon Musk of Biotech.” If you want to understand how he turned bold ideas into billion-dollar companies—and why perseverance, curiosity, and being willing to be wrong are the secret sauce—this is a must-listen. 👂✨
👀 Curious about:
- The pivotal moments when startups pivot or persevere? 🔄
- What it’s like to build $1B+ companies that transform healthcare? 🌍
- Why culture and mission matter more than hours worked? ⏰💡
- How founders and investors align to build big outcomes vs. simply incremental ones? 💼🤝
This episode is packed with insights for entrepreneurs, investors, and anyone passionate about the future of health and tech. Don’t miss it!

I’ve always fascinated with the bias against the transformative power of technology in drug discovery.
Looking forward to hosting the webinar "Activated Intelligence: AI's Leap from Algorithms to Impact" next week with Andrew Hopkins of Xyme, Jared Saul of
@awscloud, and Andrew Dobry of BiOptic.

Great article by @BenTomaszewski on employer sponsored health benefits. With costs as a clear catalyst, the move towards integrated care and AI-driven efficiencies has the potential to deliver better outcomes for patients with less financial burden.

Per the WSJ today: 90% of drugs are generics with thin margins. Reform requires innovation in the middle of the pharmaceutical supply chain. This is an area where AI can lead to step function changes and ideally better outcomes for patients while continuing to foster the creation of new innovative medicines.

Great article by Averin's Eric Berry on digital twins. As we think about the need to make clinical trials faster, less expensive, and more predictable, digital twins offer a the potential for a step function change in addition to the rest of what they can do for healthcare.

Great article by Rich Yang of Biolinq on the potential for devices coupled to drugs to transform care. We are just at the beginning of the era of measured self and the potential to unlock better care and outcomes-including from what drugs would do independently.

Whenever there is a challenge presented, I prefer to think about what are the opportunities that are created. The impact of the MFN is of course far reaching, but it also strikes me that this could be huge catalyst AI drug discovery and development. Increasing productivity by reducing cost and time while increasing probability of success can create a different economic framework.
