If UK wants immigration to fall, losing tax revenues by £4 billion, higher taxes, lower spending, more borrowing must plug the hole. So much for the rightwing myth that migrants are a drain on their host country: if anything, they’ve been bailing UK out theguardian.com/commentisfre…

A Proms performance of Malcolm Arnold’s fifth symphony. Of interest @PlusTovell?
It was! Urging us to know how wonderful it is. A few years later I saw him conduct it again, this time at the Barbican. Excited to discover that he will conduct the 7th there next April, again with the @BBCSO. This Proms perf. was released on this disc which I found online.

Where’s Parsifal when you need him?!
My train is delayed just outside Reading due to a swan on the line. Never heard that one before.

Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: City Lights ballet is a Chaplin triumph for the National Ballet of Japan @nntt_ballet The City Lights ballet tells Chaplin’s silent story with absolute clarity, as Kosuke Okumura’s double tours and twirling walking stick bring the tramp to life. - @GWDanceWriter gramilano.com/2026/10/city-l…

3/3 At one time there were eight synagogues for different traditions on or just off of Cheetham Hill Road. All closed as communities dispersed and congregations moved to new buildings, but the best known is the former Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, now part of the brilliant Manchester Jewish Museum.

The High Court of New Zealand has ruled a blanket ban on puberty blockers for trans youth in the country is unlawful. The regulation, due to take effect in December last year, would have prevented doctors from prescribing puberty blockers to new patients experiencing gender dysphoria or gender incongruence. But in a judgment handed down on Wednesday, the court found the Health Minister’s decision was unlawful and the regulations should be set aside. Justice Dale La Hood said it was “a discriminatory and disproportionate response” and there was “overwhelming clinical support” for the use of puberty blockers to treat gender dysphoria. "Youth requiring treatment for gender dysphoria/incongruence are being denied access to clinically appropriate medicine to which their peers have access for different conditions,” the judgment said. The Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA) brought the case against the NZ Ministry of Health over the ban.

For no good reason, I’ve sudden conceived a passion to re-watch a St. Trinians film. Many pluses: Ronald Searle’s credits, Malcolm Arnold marvellously jocular score among them. I remember my brother Robin and I giggling helplessly at Dora Bryan. Might I be hideously disappointed?

Birthday boy Malcolm Arnold wrote 130+ film scores and tons of orchestral music including 9 symphonies, the best of which is 5. I was at this @bbcproms performance and, at the end, conductor Sakari Oramo brandished the score at us in delight. A marvel! youtu.be/jHidl3IXo-o?is=I8lL…

#OTD 1922 1/3 - David Lloyd George resigns as Prime Minister. On 18 October 1922, the Conservative Reginald Clarry won a by-election at Newport in Monmouthshire, signalling a grassroots Tory revolt against the coalition government of Conservatives and Lloyd George Liberals.

Former Head of MI6 Sir John Sawers, "Russia was very keen that the Leave campaign should succeed and that Britain should leave the European Union" "Because that would marginalise Britain as a global player and weaken Europe in general" "That's the strategic opportunity the Russians spotted, and the leaders of the Leave campaign fell into it" My view: Former MI6 chief Sir John Sawers says Russia saw Brexit as a way to weaken Britain and divide Europe, and that the Leave campaign’s leaders walked straight into the opportunity. So let’s remember who sold it: VOTE LEAVE • Boris Johnson — political figurehead • Michael Gove and Gisela Stuart — campaign committee co-convenors • Matthew Elliott — chief executive • Dominic Cummings — campaign director • Daniel Hannan — leading Brexit advocate • Priti Patel, Iain Duncan Smith, Chris Grayling, John Whittingdale and Theresa Villiers — senior Conservative campaigners • David Davis, Liam Fox, Dominic Raab, Steve Baker and Douglas Carswell — prominent Leave campaigners LEAVE. EU • Nigel Farage — leading political figure • Arron Banks — co-chairman and major funder • Andy Wigmore — communications director GRASSROOTS OUT / LABOUR LEAVE • Peter Bone and Tom Pursglove — Grassroots Out co-founders • Kate Hoey — Grassroots Out co-founder and Labour Leave campaigner • Graham Stringer, Kelvin Hopkins and Roger Godsiff — Labour Leave campaigners • Sammy Wilson — prominent DUP Leave campaigner They promised Brexit would make Britain stronger. Sawers says Russia saw the opposite opportunity: a Britain marginalised and a Europe weakened.
