Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

“Trend: how books with a single word in the title and long subtitles that consist of recent social scientific research giving empirical support to common sense sandwiched between attention grabbing anecdotes at the start of each chapter become bestsellers.”

Thumos without reason is madness; reason without thumos is feckless. Better to be feckless than mad. Unfortunately, Rubio has chosen to be both feckless and mad.

Rubio finding out he has to become a Straussian and teach a year-long close exegesis of Plato's Republic.

SECRETARY RUBIO: This thumos, as the Ancient Greeks called it - the fire of passion, strength, courage, pride - is the heart of great civilization. Without it, nations lose their will to fight, to strive, to survive.

The whole point of Greek philosophy is that thymos that is not harnessed and steered by reason leads to calamity. THAT is the difference between Odysseus and Achilles, and the heart of Western civilization. And Trump is the antithesis of this.

Based on his first interview, Caldwell seems barely half as bright as Ross. Next, please.

So if Rubio is the nominee, Pete’s height doesn’t matter. That’s a huge unlock. I’ve always thought his height was more of a problem than his sexual orientation.

This take on the Odyssey correctly cuts through the culture war cant about the film. I refrain from using the Scylla and Charibdis metaphor…

Obviously supposed to have contemporary resonance in terms of breakdown of international order. But I didn’t feel it was liberal-dogmatic. One could have conservative, liberal or postliberal understandings of that. Collapse of the common good on a global scale.

I wonder if sociology would benefit from a great-books based reform. Re-read Weber, Durkheim, and DuBois! Go back to the source and re-form your intellect in the face of better models.

The Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer says 94%. The audience says 97%. I liked it too. People I respect like Bret Devereaux, Theo Nash, and Patrick Wyman all read the film as a successful Bloomian “strong misreading”—and then Emily Wilson, who gave us the most celebrated recent... 1/

PSA that the ship of Odyssey discourse is going to be blown onto a new course this week as @PatrickDeneen new book, American Odyssey, is released. He’s going to try to wrongly convince you the epic is an apology for postliberalism. Let’s man the oars and be ready to pull!

The encounter between the shade of Achilles (= the Iliad) and Odysseus ( = the Odyssey) in the Underworld scene stages the most explicit contrast between the two epics’ world-views; to some, it’s among the most important moments in the Odyssey. That Nolan omits it is bewildering.
Why are so many people shocked that Achilles wasn't in Nolan's Odyssey? He's a main character in the Iliad, but in the poem it's only his ghost that talks with Odysseus in the Underworld.

In moral terms, the Odyssey is a post-Catholic film (Nolan was raised Catholic and attended Catholic school). Odysseus is haunted by guilt and dons a monk’s cowl. The climax of the film is a confession scene in which he details his sins through a screen.
