Michigan State fell 28-10 at No. 9 UCLA on Saturday. Without its starting QB and top two running backs, MSU managed just 156 yards of offense and has now lost six straight going into the bye week.

An update to my response to Nolan Finley’s column in The Detroit News.
Turns out I missed another factual error in his piece, this one involving his description of Spartan Ventures.
I’ve updated the article accordingly. At this rate, I may need to keep the editor’s note handy.
Luckily for Nolan Finley, he gets to write opinion columns – so he doesn’t have to include all the facts.
That freedom was on full display Wednesday in his latest column about MSU.
Here, I fill in some of the important details he conveniently left out:

Nolan Finley's latest column leaves out documented misconduct, independent investigative findings, established university governance standards and some pretty important facts about Spartan Ventures & how college athletes are compensated. Are you surprised?

Hurley: As much as they were mean to me - and rightfully so - we root for Michigan State.

Ends his presser with "Go Sparty"
Hurley: We have our own shit to figure out. It wasn't a fucking Oppenheimer performance out there. Said he wanted to make it awhile this season without cussing, but wasn't able to do it.
Hurley said it was a top tier atmosphere here tonight. Couldn't believe it was an exhibition. "We were bracing for impact." Mentions several time his respect for Izzo and MSU.
Under-4 timeout: UConn leads MSU 67-57 with 3:16 left. The Spartans have scored six of the last seven points after trailing by 15. Fears and McCulloch supplied the last two baskets, but MSU remains 2-for-15 from three. UConn has free throws coming.
UConn leads MSU 58-50 with 8:08 left. The Huskies are 5-for-7 from three this half; MSU is 1-for-5 (and 2-for-13 overall). The Spartans have just one second-half turnover and haven’t allowed an offensive rebound this half, but perimeter shooting remains the difference.
Jasiah Jervis makes all three free throws to answer Silas Demary Jr.’s 3-pointer, then Jeremy Fears Jr. comes up with a steal and feeds Coen Carr for a layup. MSU cuts UConn’s lead to 48-44 with 11:10 remaining.
MSU has cleaned up its possessions with zero second-half turnovers, but UConn leads 45-39. After opening the half 4-for-5, the Spartans have gone 2-for-10. They’re generating chances but have missed their last five shots and three of seven free throws.

Under-16 timeout: UConn leads MSU 35-30 with 15:44 left. The Spartans are 4-for-8 with no turnovers this half and have held UConn without an offensive rebound. Colben Landrew’s three pushed the lead back to five after MSU twice cut it to two.
Both teams are 7-for-14 inside the arc, but UConn has four 3-pointers to MSU’s one. The Spartans’ bench has kept them close with a 10-2 scoring edge. UConn’s starters have outscored MSU’s starters, 28-12.
UConn leads the rebounding battle 19-17, with eight offensive boards fueling a 10-3 edge in second-chance points. Combined with MSU’s 10 turnovers, those extra chances have helped the Huskies take seven more shots despite similar shooting percentages.
After Bonke’s layup at 4:15, MSU had four turnovers and just one shot attempt – McCulloch’s missed three at 2:22. UConn went 2-for-9 over that stretch but extended its lead from 23-19 to 30-22. MSU’s drought was as much about getting shots as making them.
Michigan State recognized John Oliphant on the court tonight. The 1968 MSU graduate and Muskegon native served during the Vietnam War as a naval flight officer and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1990 after 22 years of military service. He now resides in Whitehall, MI.
