The tornadic supercell that just produced a strong tornado near Newnan, Georgia, has traveled across 4 states for a total of over 400 miles since forming around 3:00 PM CDT in southeast Louisiana.
A truly wild journey.

- The pressure of 910 mb ties for 5th all time lowest at landfall in the Atlantic basin. It is just outside the top 10 for any time period. #Dorian

A few Hurricane Dorian records:
- At 185 mph, it is tied for the 2nd strongest in the Atlantic basin. Only Allen (1980) was stronger at 190 mph.
- The 185 mph landfall is tied with the Labor Day hurricane (1935) for strongest wind speed at landfall in the Atlantic basin.

With winds now estimated at 185 mph, only 4 storms -- of the 1,869 recorded in the Atlantic over the past 169 years -- have been as strong or stronger (based on max winds) than Hurricane #Dorian. Hopefully this is the last update to this thread. #HurricaneDorian

Only six Atlantic #hurricanes since 1950 have had stronger winds than #HurricaneDorian's current max winds of 175 mph: Allen (1980), Gilbert (1988), Mitch (1998), Rita (2005), Wilma (2005) and Irma (2017).

Most recent dropsonde in #Dorian's eye has a "V" signature that indicates sinking air almost all the way to the ocean surface. This is an extreme signature, and very rare.
The pressure when adjusted for surface wind is about 913mb.

175 mph. 922 mb. #Dorian #HurricaneDorian
Worth noting the central pressure in #Dorian as measured by Hurricane Hunters this morning fell steadily from the last mission 7 hours ago (928 mb from 934 mb). Unfortunately there isn't much in the short term to interrupt this trend.

Of the 1,869 Atlantic storms recorded over the last 169 years, only 18 have recorded winds as strong or stronger than Hurricane #Dorian right now (175 mph). This is truly an historic storm.
