Thank you, @WesleyLHuff for your memories of Dr. Parker.
He was my professor of ethics during my undergraduate studies at @CriswellCollege and also taught a 3-week intensive that began my masters degree there (three days after I graduated).
That intensive study was focused on "The Reconstruction of the Christian Revelation Claim" by Stuart Hackett, which all of us in the class read with a dictionary by our side.
On the first day of class, he said, "Your mid-term is one week from tomorrow. Bring a Blue Book for the test. There will be three essay questions, which I will tell you in advance. You have two hours to write your answers."
"I grade as they do in Europe, where I studied. Grading will be on a bell curve. With eight of you in the class, probably only one — perhaps two — of you will make an 'A'. You just need to do better than your classmates."
A student asked, "That sounds very subjective. What determines whether a person makes an 'A', 'B', or 'C'?"
Dr. Parker replied, "If you are able to answer the questions appropriately, you are guaranteed to make a 'C'. If you answer the questions very well, you will make a 'B'."
The student said, "What do we have to do to make an 'A'?
Dr. Parker grinned and said, "If you tell me something I don't know, you will make an 'A'."
The next day after the midterm, Dr. Parker entered the class with a sullen look on his face. He said, "I'm very disappointed."
All of us immediately believed that we had all failed.
Then he continued, "No matter how I tried to justify grading on a strict bell curve, my integrity will not allow it. Three of you deserve 'A's, and that's what I gave you."
As proud as I was to be one of the three, I was much more grateful to have had Dr. Jim Parker as my professor. A godly, wonderful, humble servant of Christ, who also happened to be one of the most brilliant men I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
I am posting this brief memory, as well as my notes that I prepared for that mid-term and the final, at davidrhoades.org/blog/for-dr…
Dr. Jim Parker, former @SBTS prof. Graduate of Trinity, Princeton, Basil, and John Hopkins, passed away early this past Saturday morning. Dr. Paker will be missed. He was a genuine treasure. And interestingly enough, I inherited his personal library.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

1st half = Texas is going to win the national champion.
2nd half = Texas can't compete in the Big 12.

I'm 57. Went to Baylor 40 years ago. Had an Old Testament professor who didn't believe in the truthfulness of the Bible. They charter (i.e., pay for) a LGBTQ group on campus. They drifted away from their original mission a long time ago. They've got a new mission and lord.

If plurality had to wait for ideal conditions, there would be no elders in Acts.

If your church has one elder, it is not a failing church. It is an unfinished one.

The CeCe Winans, Michael W Smith, Amy Grant Christmas Tour this year will cost you $61 to $560 to $1,600 a ticket depending on where you sit and the venue they're performing. That last one i must admit took my breath away.
Can you imagine beloved charging people tickets in order to come see you sing Christmas songs to celebrate the incarnation (the birth) of the Lord Jesus Christ? (John 1:14) Jesus told His disciples and apostles, "...freely you have received, freely you should give." (Matt 10:8)
How dare they claim to represent the King of kings and Lord of lords and then treat Him as a widget to be sold as retail merchandise, huckstering His Name, Word and Gospel, fleecing all who are undiscerning and willing to pay the piper. (2 Cor 2:17)
So very sad... that after all these years in Christian music, they treat the worship of Immanuel, God with us, as entertainment!
God will not be mocked and "He will not share His glory with another!" (Is 42:8)
"What erodes when that block erodes is not the sermon. You'll get a sermon. Men in a hurry have been getting sermons for two thousand years. What erodes is the man."

The best they'll ever do is: "I don't agree with Talarico, but...."
It's the same thing they do with egalitarianism in the SBC: "I'm a complementarian, but...."
When a person on God's team keeps helping out the devil, at some point it becomes clear how deceived they truly are.
Every sermon, book, and tool a pastor produces from the Word of God should be free for God's churches. Seeking worldly profit from them corrupts motives, invites the scorn of unbelievers, and cheapens the price Christ paid to offer salvation without cost.
"Freely you received, freely give.” (Matt. 10:8).
