ALT I’m so sorry to not be able to be here with you tonight but I’m incredibly touched to receive this award. Thank you to the Society of Editors, the judges, my editors at The Guardian, and the readers who for over a decade have shared their stories with me. Columnists have a unique role in helping shape the national conversation. As we all know, though, the people doing the shaping are still not representative of the country at large. 44% of columnists in the British media attended private school, according to the Social Mobility Commission. Only 0.2% of journalists are Black. There’s not even a proper record of how many have a disability. That matters, because readers are under-served when their life experiences are not reflected in, or by, the people who write the news.

ALT I’m thought to be the first ever wheelchair user to have a column in the British press. I’m one of the first physically disabled people to be in any kind of high profile role at a British newspaper. And I’m a millennial. I remember dial-up internet. I should not be the first anything. There are countless brilliantly talented journalists who won’t get the chance to stand here and accept an award simply because they couldn’t afford to do that unpaid internship or never got to the editorial meeting because it was held upstairs without a lift. But all of that can change with the right action, whether that’s through hiring more working class people in leadership positions or commissioning disabled journalists to write about subjects other than disability. I might be the first but I do not have to be the last.

ALT We, the leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, welcome the tireless work of our partners in Qatar, Egypt and the United States towards an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages. We endorse the joint statement of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, President Sisi and President Biden calling for the immediate resumption of negotiations. We agree that there can be no further delay. We have been working with all parties to prevent escalation and will spare no effort to reduce tensions and find a path to stability. The fighting must end now, and all hostages still detained by Hamas must be released. The people of Gaza need urgent and unfettered delivery and distribution of aid.
