Being busy isn't the same as being productive. Most of us know this, and yet we keep falling into the same traps — the ones that make the day feel full while the work that matters sits untouched. Here are seven I've had to catch myself in: 1. Reacting instead of planning. If your calendar is built by other people's emails, you don't have a schedule. You have an inbox with time slots. 2. Mistaking motion for progress. Shuffling tabs, re-reading Slack, tidying your to-do list — all of it feels like work. None of it is. 3. Saying yes by default. Every yes to someone else's priority is a no to your own. The calendar doesn't lie about this. 4. Treating urgency as importance. The loudest task is rarely the most important one. Urgency is a feeling, not a filter. 5. Multitasking. The research is unambiguous: you're not doing two things at once. You're doing both of them worse. 6. Avoiding the hard thing. Distraction is almost always an escape from discomfort. The task you keep putting off is usually the one that would move you forward. 7. Not planning time for yourself. If your values — rest, health, family, deep work — don't appear on your calendar, they don't exist in your week. Time management is pain management. You can't out-hustle discomfort. You can only decide, in advance, what you'd do without it — and then put it on the calendar.
