Long lines at polling places isn’t so much a sign of lots of eager voters as it is a sign of a nation that doesn’t really want lots of eager voters. voter inconvenience is not an accident. So overwhelm them with your vote no matter what.

After a long absence, I put on a record of Bach, inhale the fragrant earth in the garden. I think again of poems and novels to be written, and I return to the silence of the morning rain. The beginning of the world of tomorrow. Pier Paolo Pasolini.

IDK who all needs to hear this, but… We never had to debate whether deaths were “from vs with” measles… when no one had measles! 🤷🏽‍♂️

When Dolly Parton died, America lost a piece of its heart. When Wendell Berry died, America lost a piece of its soul. Don’t listen to those loud bragging fake toughs who insist empathy is a weakness. People, empathy is not a weakness. It’s our only superpower.

MPU is doing the best journalism on the planet right now. Banger after banger.
NEW: America’s biggest berry empire doesn’t actually grow berries. Driscoll’s is the middleman that controls the genetics, reaps the profits, and then shifts blame. A whistleblower alleges the Canadian government repeatedly flagged their berries for exceeding pesticide limits.

The time Dolly Parton and Kermit jammed to Sly and the Family Stone. This is always how I will remember her.

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school, she built hospitals and bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert once met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.

I’m using my executive authority to ban nonferrous mining in the Boundary Waters.    As far as my administration is concerned, the fight for the future of the Boundary Waters is over. The verdict is in. The decision is made. We will protect this place.

A biology teacher in Pine Bluff, Arkansas noticed one of her students kept falling asleep in class. Instead of sending her to the principal, she asked why. The girl was living with a grandmother who had no bed for her, in a house with termites eating the walls and the electricity shut off. The teacher, Crystal Barnes, bought a bed frame and mattress with her own money, on a fifty thousand dollar salary. When she delivered it, the girl asked if she could also have some food. She was hungry. Barnes now keeps a cart of snacks in her classroom, paid for out of pocket, because she can't undo what federal cuts have done but she can do that much. Barnes found her own way out of a similar hole as a pregnant fifteen year old, through a nonprofit that fed her son and helped her finish school. She's spending her career paying that forward one bed, one snack cart at a time. It's not policy. It's not enough. It's just what's left when policy fails and someone still shows up anyway.
President Trump has kicked 1.5 million children off food stamps over the last year; I saw the pain everywhere on a 1,000-mile road trip. But I also saw heroism: local food pantries, teachers, churches and others trying desperately to push back the night. nytimes.com/2026/08/15/opini…

Again, this is vile and garbage. And not from a fringe internet troll but from a US Congresswoman from SC though I repeat myself. If you’re ok with this I’m not ok with you and never will be.

It was always going to be this. Spineless isn’t a temporary condition. Neither is losing your honor. But they don’t care because it’s about power and only power. And corruption. This confirmation will damn us all. Watch what they do next. They’re just getting started.
Breaking News: Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, the two Republican senators who threatened to block Todd Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general, now say they support it. nyti.ms/4fPeq1V

more than one hundred years ago a young man named Upton Sinclair, living in a small cabin about two miles from this house, on Rosedale Rd., Princeton, wrote a novel exposing the unspeakably filthy conditions of meat-packing in Chicago, titled "The Jungle." President Teddy Roosevelt read the novel, his stomach (which was considerable) was turned, he called Sinclair to the White House, & soon thereafter laws were passed to regulate (to some degree) the meat-packing industry. Today we don't have a US president who can read, let alone read an entire novel; we have a US president who has deregulated industries that provide food & medicine for us, to our detriment.
I wish it was more common knowledge that almost all regulations exist because companies weren’t doing these things on their own and bad things were happening because of it.
