When I was 13, I told my mom that i thought my father was doing something very wrong to me - we were in the car, she had picked me up from school, I had tears streaming down my face, I was tired and terrified. I had held it in so long. And all I wanted was her to help me get him to stop.
We had parked in front of the garage. She said “you should be ashamed. Your father loves you and would never hurt you.” And then she got out of the car and ran inside. She locked me out of the house.
The thing was…she knew. She knew everything. She had spent years ignoring it. She aided him. Chided me for not being affectionate. And when I needed her the most, she abandoned me.
She spent the rest of her 96 years telling me how my father loved me. And how I should revere his memory. She lost my love and most of all my respect when I was 13.
We as a country are my mother right now. It’s time to face our realities and walk towards truth and understanding. The victims of tomorrow (and there will be more because there will always be bad people) are counting on us to protect and believe them. And the victims of today and the past need love and compassion.
We say we protect children. It’s time to do that.

I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for two years, wondering if the America I believed in was a mirage.
IT WAS NOT!!! It was not.
I think of @DollyParton and Rob Reiner plus so many others we lost this past year, who fought against the administration, stood up for the people of this country and didn’t get to celebrate tonight.
We love and miss you
And may the celebration where you are be as bright and fun as ours is tonight.
Cheers 🥂 to all of us 🌊🌊🌊

I spoke with Haley Stevens yesterday.
Feeling a bit absurd in pointing out the obvious and being far kinder than I should have been, I reminded her that the outcome of this senate race will be viewed in the light of a future Supreme Court vacancy, and I expressed a hope that all of us understand the stakes.
She assured me she's supporting Dr. El-Sayed, sent me a video of a recent speech she gave blasting Mike Rogers and said this: "Still stands. I promise."
She also said she's been sending this video to other folks to make it clear where she stands on this race.
Again: that was yesterday.
I have known Haley Stevens for years. I have counted her as a friend and an ally. We've had many thoughtful conversations about this country, and she has never failed to remind me that her mother is a fan of my writing.
Whatever other political differences we have, she has always made it clear to me she would stand with LGBTQ people. It was a red line she refused to cross.
Instead, she has made the inexplicable decision to endorse a man who views LGBTQ Americans as second-class citizens unworthy of full equality.
I can't help but wonder what her mother must be thinking right now.
I have no idea what has happened to the person I thought I knew, but clearly, she has completely taken leave of her senses in endorsing a Republican who is little more than a Trump sycophant -- less than 24 hours after promising me that she has not wavered from the bigger picture.
I am disgusted with her cynicism and cowardice in this moment. God forgive me for trusting her.
If you're a Michigan voter and as disgusted as I am, get to your polling place and vote for Dr. El-Sayed.
