โWe are as great as the responsibility we are willing to take.โ
Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
Yesterday the @JewishJournal published my first op-ed ever. This was a responsibility I felt called to take, and I am grateful to my dear friend and co-author Laura Goldstein for encouraging me to see it through.
I submitted this weeks ago because I knew these issues mattered. Results may seem conclusive right now, but there are still so many ballots to be counted and with elections, you never really know.
This conversation is just the beginning.
It would mean so much to me if you would read it, share your thoughts, and share it if it resonated with you.

I have spoken out against anti-Muslim hate in the Michigan Senate race. I will speak out just as loudly when the target is Jewish people.
Let me state a little-known fact: ISRAEL GETS LESS THAN 0.1 PERCENT OF THE FEDERAL BUDGET. Thatโs less than one tenth of a percent!
But there is an ad running that tells voters they canโt afford groceries because the United States gives so much money to Israel. In reality, the United States spends money in and on countries all around the world โ but this ad singles out the Jewish state. The ad is as dangerous as it is dishonest.
You can disagree with how the United States spends money abroad. But telling hungry families that the Jewish state is the reason they are suffering is wrong and shameful.
Blaming Jews for peopleโs problems is an old story. Anybody who has read the last century of history knows where it leads. It is a dark pathway.
This ad is anti-Jewish hate and should come down immediately. Abdul El-Sayed should denounce it today.

Iโm a lifelong Democrat.
Iโve voted in every election since turning 18 - never GOP. I volunteered for Barack, Hilary, Joe & Kamala.
I oppose the DSA because they donโt share my values or get shit done. I wish theyโd form their own party.
2 things can be true at once.

BREAKING: Ahead of President Obamaโs Detroit rally with Dr. El-Sayed, 230 rabbis from 34 states plus DC sent Dr. El-Sayed an open letter standing in solidarity with the Michigan rabbis and leaders behind Nonnegotiable Michigan.
Their request is simple: that when Dr. El-Sayed stands beside President Obama, he affirm our five nonnegotiables publicly and in his own words, and then demonstrate through his words and actions that he means them.๏ฟผ

Brad is a liarโฆ. HIS own earlier posts confirm the purpose was not neutral farming: the trip aimed โto help protect the olive harvest โ and to shed a light on the reality of the occupationโ and counter what he calls โstate-sanctioned settler terrorism.โ It was organized activism.
โSimply harvesting olivesโฆ isnโt a crime under any law I know.โโจOlive harvesting itself is not a crime. Remaining in (or entering) a declared closed military zone after being ordered to leave is an offense under the military orders that govern Area C.
Foreign nationals can be detained, processed, warned, or deported for violating those rules or entry conditions. The groupโs account is that they agreed to leave but were still held for checks and transport. That is standard procedure for a large uncoordinated group of activists in a restricted area, not a novel crime of โpicking olives.โ Similar detentions of RHR and other activist groups occur regularly during harvest seasons when zones are closed over security assessments.
โThe occupation is a crime under international law.โโจThis is contested political rhetoric, not settled law. The territories were captured in the 1967 defensive war. Jordanโs prior control of the West Bank was not widely recognized as legitimate sovereignty. Israel maintains they are disputed territories with deep historical Jewish ties, not โoccupied Palestinian landโ in the sense of an illegal conquest from a prior legitimate sovereign.
โจThe Oslo Accords (accepted by the PLO) left Area C under Israeli jurisdiction. Multiple Israeli offers of statehood were rejected. The 2024 ICJ advisory opinion declaring the presence unlawful is non-binding, highly controversial, rejected by Israel (and previously by the U.S. position on the core status), and rests on characterizations of settlements, annexation policies, and self-determination that major states do not treat as rendering the entire presence a crime.
What actually happened
Lander (Democratic nominee for NY-10, former NYC Comptroller) was among roughly 80โ90 volunteers with Rabbis for Human Rights / the โProtect the Harvestโ coalition accompanying Palestinian farmers near Nahalin (outside Bethlehem; Lander wrote โNehalimโ). After about two hours, IDF, police, and Border Police arrived, declared the area a closed military zone (for 24 hours), and detained the group for identification, photographing passports/IDs, and transport to a police station.
Foreigners were separated from Israeli citizens. No one was reported harmed. Lander was later released with a warning (he attributed this to his profile); others remained in processing longer.
This is consistent with standard practice in Area C of the West Bank (under the Oslo Accords, Israel retains full security and civil control there pending final-status talks). Olive harvest season is an annual friction point; closed-zone orders are routinely used to manage crowds of activists, prevent clashes near settlements, and limit access in security-sensitive areas, especially post-October 7, 2023. Many groves near settlements or friction zones require prior coordination for safety reasons.
Occupation is a recognized status under the Fourth Geneva Convention when effective control exists; prolonged occupation and settlement policy are heavily debated, but calling the presence itself a โcrimeโ is advocacy, not black-letter consensus. Security threats (terrorism, rocketing, infiltrations) have never ended.

Mayor Bass' approach to public safety is working: Burglaries in the Valley are down 43%, and the citywide homicide rate is at a 60 year low.
Meanwhile, Nithya Raman ran on defunding the police and voted against the hiring of more than 700 police officers our city needs.

Today, I received a threatening letter at my Grand Rapids, Michigan office that contained unidentified white powder. The letter, which claimed to be from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), made a direct and specific reference to an impending โcivil warโ beginning after the election. The letter sent to my office is similar to those received at other congressional offices across the country. The DSA has not yet addressed the attacks, either to condemn them or to take or deny responsibility. The Grand Rapids Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) responded immediately.
Threats and extremism are not signs of strengthโthey are signs of a weak mind and weak character. Political intimidation has no place in our democracy, and leaders must condemn it, not excuse it. Iโll keep standing up to bullies on the right and the left.

"As a lifelong Democrat, I have a very hard time finding myself at home in the Democratic Party right now," Michigan voter Eddie Rubin tells @tonydokoupil.
Rubin, whose two youngest children survived the March 12 attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield when a man rammed a truck into the building, says antisemitism is one of the most important issues in the midterm elections and he wants to see leaders from both parties address it.
"This should be an issue that is on everyone's mind and a human issue," Rubin says. "It's not a party issue."
Tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT, watch voters like Rubin take their questions directly to Vice President JD Vance in "Things That Matter: A Town Hall with Vice President JD Vance," on CBS and @paramountplus.
