An engineer is the one who uses phenomena to create utility.
A scientist is the one who uses noumena to create understanding.
A philosopher is the one who uses observation to create (Platonic) form.
Do not confuse between the affect of opposite and orthogonal. Opposite sits on the other end of the same axis... an orthogonal axis is the one that divides the two.
Opposite of war may be peace, but it's the justice-compromise axis that separates one from the other, and vice versa.
