Day 25. Tree
The tree of life. Stunning and really unusual headstone
Rev John Wesley Hetherington
1878 -1964
Brampton old church.
We couldn’t work out what it was made of!
It looks like metal but isn’t. Also wondered if it was made with a mould?

World-leading cardiac surgeon Asif Hasan was surrounded by the children who received the gift of life thanks to his unerring skills at the emotional climax of another memorable Pride of Britain ceremony. 🥹
Now 70 years old, Mr Hasan has just retired after 35 years of service at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, but just after receiving his Lifetime Achievement Award, he had an extra special surprise: a cast of patients who would not be alive without him. ❤️

The women of MI5 who helped win the First World War have been forgotten.
They possessed brilliant minds, carried out daring operations and carried secrets to their graves that helped shape the course of history.
This thread reveals their remarkable untold legacies:

Please settle an argument. I”m seeing someone the Thursday of next week. Ie 9 days. They thought I meant this week because I arranged it yesterday so it’s the next Thursday! I would have said this Thursday if it was this week!,😳🙃
Remembering my grandfather who died on this day in 1914.
My nan had to struggle alone with 4 boys
He talks of moving nearer home. It wasn’t to be. He died on his 40th birthday. I often think of the nurse who gave him that paper and pencil to write his last letter

No 20 fire
epigraph in memory of a blacksmith's life.
My sledge and hammer both declined, My bellows they have lost the wind, My fire extinct, my forge decayed, And in the dust my vice is laid.
My coals have spent, my iron gone,

Day 19 Water
This memorial in my local churchyard is to a Captain's wife who drowned. 15 years later so did he. He had survived the shipwreck that she died in.
It’s a tragic tale that I researched

This headstone in Gisburn has a musical score inscribed on it! What a delightful find.
Francis Duckworth: organist at the Methodist Church in Colne, and composer of hymn tunes -notably "Rimington," which is engraved onto the lower portion of the headstone

In the the tiny churchyard on St Martin’s Idles of Scilly. I only saw a couple of words and scraped away the leaves.
I loved that quote

#31daysofgraves Day 14 brick
A headstone I found on "brick beach" at Hightown where rubble from the Liverpool blitz was dumped in 1942. I found a gravestone in the bricks! I discovered the family’s history from one small chunk of headstone.

The ordinary grave of my Nan, Emily. I found it after a long search, put flowers on it and thanked her for bringing up my dad so well on her own after she was widowed in #WW1
There are not many “ordinary” graves really!
